My cousin (who works for Amoeba) found me a new copy for $30. I think the blue vinyl came out around 5 years ago.

There's a lot of different version of this album, on both CD and vinyl, and this is the one to get, but that one's too rich for my blood, especially since I already have 3 separate releases (original CD, 2-CD pill-package reissue, blue vinyl).

Thirty bucks I could handle. :)

Other than Discogs and eBay, do any of you have another good place to seek out specific records that are out of print? About 30 people on Discogs have an album I want, but none of them are actually for sale. eBay has a "test pressing" but there's no way to verify that it's an official test pressing and not some random bootleg shit.

Local record stores run by people that give a fuck can be very helpful. Otherwise, independent sellers on amazon.

Good advice. I'll contact a handful of good independent shops in the area that seem to be run by trusty folks. None of them are particularly close to where I'm living, but if they have what I want, then it'll be worth the drive.

Unrelated, last night I listened to an electronic album on vinyl I hadn't heard in well over 10 years. It was interesting to hear it again, in general, but when the last song kicked in, I had a flood of good memories. I'm sure hearing it on a streaming service would have had a similar effect (as it has for me with many other albums), but there really is something special about hearing it again after so long. Like I never forgot it.

Anyway, the song was A Panel Of Experts by Solvent on the Solvent City album.

Surprisingly, the record was still in very good shape.

You guys see this record crawl thing?

Hard to get excited about going to the one in Austin, but there is an open bar. Would be more fun if I had a trip planned to another city. Maybe I will do it. David Bowie swag is said to be something possible to win.

So Third Man Records announced its twenty-ninth vault package. I've always liked these but stopped getting them a while ago. This one though I'll definitely be getting as its a collaboration with Pearl Jam who happens to be one of my all time favorite bands. There's a live album, an Eddie Vedder single, a photo book, a patch, and a pin.

Just ordered the new 45rpm reissues of Peter Gabriel's Us and Up. Both have been OOP on vinyl for years and the original issues are commanding hundreds of dollars on the used market. The new ones are $35 each on Amazon and both come with a 24/96 download code. A reissue of So has also come out but I'm skipping that one since I can get a UK first pressing for $10 and I already have a hi-res copy of the album that sounds fantastic.

Looks like Real World did a very nice job on the packaging (hidden for size):

I ended up scooping this up for $10 shipped used via Amazon and their 3rd market Amazon Warehouse front:

Also ended up (finally!) scooping up Doyle's album.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I ended up ordering So as well and Amazon sent me a damaged copy. The outer plastic was split open, as were the two inner sleeves. Very disappointing. The vinyl itself is fine and sounds fantastic. I'be requested a replacement which should be here later this week.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Hot damn, Up sounds exceptional! A million times better than the CD. If you're at all a fan of this album you need to hear this new vinyl reissue. Absolute winner.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Are these the $36 versions on Amazon? As an aside, a Japanese CD of So is going for $94?!

Supermallet 07-18-16 10:38 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah, $36 a pop. Definitely worth it for Up. Us is the least sonically improved over the original CD, but trying to get an original release on vinyl will cost hundreds, not worth it for me. So sounds excellent, especially since it's pressed at 45 RPM.

Not sure what the deal is with a $94 CD of So. I know there was a set that had the album on CD, vinyl, and some extras on DVD that went for about that price.

I'm about to dig into a big pile of vinyl

First of all what is this? A 78? http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...s/image_1.jpeg

Here's the pile. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...nts/image.jpeg

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Went through it all. Crazy collection of mostly crap. 80% of it was "So and So Plays With Strings". My god everybody covered Strangers in the Night back in the day.

There's nearly every Herb Alpert album, including several of his protégés.

There's a big box set of Gershwin's complete Porgy and Bess. The first time presented complete and in stereo.

Frank Sinatra's My Way. Breakfast at Tiffanys soundtrack. John Denver Christmas is pristine.

Belefonte at Carnegie Hall.

And Spirit, the band that just sued Led Zeppelin. Record is The Family That Plays Together.

I want those Peter Gabriel records but damn, $36?

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Try your favorite if the three and see if you feel it's worth it to get more. Remember they're 45 RPM.

Liked the score so much off of Stranger Things that I pre-ordered the vinyl:

Finally picked up a deck!

We had to run out so I didn't have a chance to finish set up or any anything out. I followed the instructions, but not sure it's set up correctly. I placed the tone arm between the plate and rest, balanced with the counter weight, and the zeroed out. After attaching the skate weight I let it rest inbetween again, but seemed like it was below the level of the platter. Is that wrong?
