You know, at this point I usually seek out the reissues and not the originals. I buy records to LISTEN to, not as an investment. As long as the cover art and song content is the same, I'm happy.

Although one exception I'll make on that is London Calling by The Clash. The reissues all list Train in Vain at the end of side 4. That just doesn't seem right. It should always be "hidden".

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I buy originals that are pristine. :)

I don't buy anything as an investment. I do get joy out of knowing that my copy of Magical Mystery Tour actually was listened to in 1967. I love that someone probably cleaned weed in 1966 in my copy of Blonde on Blonde.

And for the most part, the originals are cheaper than the reissues. I bought two original Apple releases of Let it Be for less than half of what a reissue costs.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I see both sides of buying reissues vs original. I've bought more reissues than anything else I guess, but I get such a kick buying a new record. It just doesn't seem like something I should be able to do after not really seeing them in stores since 1990 or so. I peruse eBay for records that haven't been reissued more often than not. I'm also shying away from the whole "this pressing is better than this other pressing" thing for originals. I could drive myself crazy trying to keep up with it all. But yeah I don't have any illusions. I know the originals sound better 99% of the time.

Supermallet 12-04-13 11:35 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I go for the originals when I can, due to not knowing what source the reissues are coming from most of the time. There are some exceptions, of course. I'd never bother with an original issue of Raw Power, because the Iggy mix blows the Bowie mix out of the water. Also, I feel pretty confident buying the MoFi version of any given record instead of the original, especially if the MoFi is cheaper.

Of course, unless you're checking catalog numbers in the store, what looks like an original issue may end up being a reissue from a few years later, so you do take a chance.

Geofferson 12-05-13 12:27 AM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Buying reissues alone gets expensive. I have mostly originals -- bought used over the years -- with some reissues peppered in. I make sure the OGs are in great condition though. Else I won't bother.

Crappy cell phone pic, but finally managed to snag an Italian pressing of this OST. Been hunting one down for years. Managed to find a guy in Italy selling his copy.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I'm copying and reposting this that a friend on FB posted.

Rosemary’s Baby will be available on clear 180 gram vinyl.

Two very limited variants will be available: 500 randomly inserted units will be pressed onto 180 gram black and crystal clear center haze vinyl.

The first 200 customers will receive a very special super variant presented in a never-before created vinyl effect: An independently double colored / sided record. SIDE A features a baby blue marble and SIDE B features a deep blood red marble. This special variant is a solid 12″ LP and weighs in at 200 grams. This record is a first of it’s kind.

LP package details include audiophile-grade virgin vinyl housed in an old style heavyweight casebound tip-on gatefold jacket with satin finish and spot UV gloss. A satin finish art print featuring an extensive essay by artist Jay Shaw will be inserted into each package.

Jay Shaw’s tasteful and detailed cover art marks the first time Rosemary’s Baby artwork has been studio-approved since Stephen Frankfurt’s iconic 1968 film poster for the film.

I just orderd that one, too. SoundStage Direct still had it in stock, but it's technically out of print already. As much as I'm looking forward to hearing the vinyl, I'm also keen to check out those 5.1 mixes. and yes, it's a DVD-A.

Currently on a big Bowie kick, and trying to replace all the vinyl of him I used to have, but lost to ex. His albums are hard to find around here, and I hate buying used without being able to personally inspect the condition of the record. I'm actually quite surprised more of his albums haven't been re-released on vinyl. Since it seemed like it was a better (and cheaper) deal to pick of this version (with the bonus DVD-A), than some of the other pressings I saw up for auction online, this was the one I went with.

I got the Green Earthling release a few weeks back. Can't recall if I posted that or not. Never heard the album before and really like it. But yes we need more Bowie reissues. Can't believe Aladdin Sane didn't get a vinyl reissue alongside the CD this year.

That's the one I've been waiting for.

Curious - have you picked up any of the other Music On Vinyl pressings of STP? They are reportedly pretty terrific sounding, but I've opted out on them so far due to funds being limited of late.

I also find it interesting that after years of not re-releasing them, suddenly Rhino in the US is putting out STP albums, now that MOV's have proven such popular sellers. Rhino re-released Purple with almost no fanfare about a month ago, and also just did a limited edition Black Friday Record Store Day release of Core, on "yellow" vinyl, this past Friday.

No kidding.

I think the last, more recent, album of his I really liked was Heathen.

I pretty much need everything from Space Oddity (which is still available as a reissue), all the way up through Scary Monsters again. I'd settle for being able to find Hunky Dory, The Man Who Sold The World, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs, at least, though.

Recently purchased an Audio Technica LP120 and slowly building up my collection. Been hitting up a shop I found on the weekends where there's a decent selection of used vinyl. Picked up around 8 last weekend and 2 of them skip pretty bad. Should this be expected? If not I was thinking about returning them. Thing is, the 2 that skip were priced at $9 and they have a $1 section where I picked up around 5 of them that didnt skip at all.

Back when Heathen came out, they offered a few different editions: Regular CD, CD in vinyl-size packaging, and vinyl. I stupidly bought the CD in vinyl-size packaging, because I figured when would I ever listen to the vinyl? And at this point I can't remember the last time I listened to a CD.

I picked up the vinyl for The Next Day, however. In fact, I've got quite a decent collection of Bowie on vinyl. Promo pressing of Hunky Dory, MFSL of Ziggy, Young Americans with textured cover, Station to Station from the giant box set reissue, original pressings of Low, Stage, Scary Monsters, and Let's Dance, and The Next Day. I also have some 12" singles, including one from Scary Monsters that comes with a set of stamps.

Buy a record brush and/or cleaner. Sometimes you can't tell from a visual inspection, so I wouldn't accuse the store of trying to rip you off.

Well, I didnt say anything about thinking I was ripped off. I'm basically just asking if you should expect this to happen when buying used vinyl. A skip here and there is understandable, but this record was not listenable.

Is your tone arm balanced properly?

I played side 4 of the RSD IN Utero and it had a small bubble in the pressing which caused a skip for about 10 seconds. It happens. I can't find my receipt or I might try and return it. I know that's hit or miss. They took back a noisy Chinese bootleg of a Stone Roses album and gave me store credit. Man that thing sounded like shit. It was early in my collecting and I thought I was getting the recent re-release.

That's the same turntable that I own. One thing that I've noticed: if you have the dustcover closed, quite a few albums will skip at the end, because the counterweight bumps up against the dustcover.

If you keep it open - that problem goes away. I'm not sure that's what you're experiencing, but I thought I'd share.

Heh. I just bought a bunch of Bowie vinyl over the past 2 years. I had Diamond Dogs already from years ago and added: Hunky Dory (original - my far and away favorite Bowie album), Ziggy (with the 5.1 mix), David Live, Station to Station, Low, Lodger, and Scary Monsters. I don't think I paid more than $8 for any of them except Hunky Dory and the Ziggy reissue.

No, for $9 it should not skip. (Unless its like a copy of an old Beatles album sold at a discount for the condition.) But there are so many variables here - the tonearm, is the record clean, etc.

My envy looms large, sir. I did just score a decent original press copy of Young Americans for $5. Still on the lookout for the others, though. Just going to take a little time, patience, and luck. Got a few nearby places I still need to check, but not the time to get to them of late. On the up side, the guy who runs the place I got Young Americans at, is going to let me know if/when any of the others come through his store. He said they come thorough regularly enough, but usually sell quickly. He's a big Bowie fan himself, and we had a really cool, lengthy conversation about him.

I don't have the MFSL to compare it to, but I was equally impressed with the 40th anniversary reissue, which I finally got a chance to spin last night. The separation of instruments and stereo sound field really shine.

Mick Ronson's solo on ""Moonage Daydream" - still get's me every time. Wish it could have gone on longer.

Haven't checked out the 5.1 mixes on the DVD-A, but that was icing as far as I was concerned, anyway. I got this for the vinyl aspect, after all.
