It isn’t.

Just a reminder that today is release day for Pink Floyd: At Pompeii MCMLLXXII on double vinyl, cd, and blu-ray. I picked up a vinyl copy in store just as it arrived this afternoon ...

Pink Floyd? Now you are just name dropping bands that no one has ever heard of to seem cool.

You got me ...
These guys aren't that bad for a bunch of unknowns. Not sure if they'll ever make it, though ...

Which one of those guys is Pink and which one is Floyd?

Oof, in that case I don't need to hear this concert!

It's almost entirely instrumental. Just a small amount of vocal ...

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Had been looking for a copy of Mahavishnu Orchestra Live - Between Nothingness & Eternity (recorded 1973 in Central Park) for some time now. Stopped in at RCP to do a little bit of browsing and, lo and behold, they had an original Canadian pressing in very good condition ...

With my 'You're one of our favorite customers so we're gonna give you a good deal, Toby' discount, I paid just a little over $15 for this sometimes-hard-to-find gem. I'd say I'm having a pretty good month, vinyl-wise ...

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Do other people buy multiple versions of the same record after they find out there was a superior-sounding pressing than the one you already had? I find I'm doing that more now just to compare the differences and appreciate the improvement.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yes but I'm also replacing my original pretty-much-seen-better-days vinyl that I've had since the 70s & 80s at the same time. I always look for the best quality pressing that I can find/afford. Discogs and the Steve Hoffman forums are an invaluable resource in this regard.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I never got rid of a record, even from the ones I acquired in high school. I always had decent equipment so the old records are still pretty much as good as they ever were. I just didn't know there were so many different mixes and pressings of the same record before and how much the quality can vary.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah, I probably have a dozen or so albums where I own multiple pressings, it's interesting comparing them and I'm always trying to "upgrade" my favorite albums. I recently bought the really nice sounding Rhino High Fidelity release of Black Sabbath's Paranoid, even though I already own two other vinyl copies, and a CD release. Damn collecting bug bit me hard!

I absolutely buy multiple versions. CDs as well. It's very enjoyable to compare them. For CDs I use Exact Audio Copy with the ABX tool.

I use EAC as well but don’t know what ABX is.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

ABX is a comparison utility. Given A and B two different samples, you are presented with X and asked to identify it as A or B. As you do additional comparisons, it gives you the probability that you're guessing, or can accurately tell which sample is which.

I looked up ABX and it looks pretty useful for comparing different versions of the same music. I’m not sure I need to be so analytical as to test that way but it’s something to think about. The volume matching is particularly interesting but does it modify the sample or just the playback volume?

Re: The VINYL Thread!

I can see mono for the albums that were recorded that way, buy why for later ones that weren’t? Some of the Beatles albums I have have god-awful stereo, like music on one channel and vocals on the other. Were those remixes of originally mono ones?

stvn1974 05-29-25 01:23 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

All of the Beatles albums were recorded in MONO except for Abbey Road and Let It Be, plus three songs. The mono mixes are what the Beatles and George Martin oversaw with the exception of The White Album. Most of the stereo mixes were done by record company employees. Lennon hated the stereo mixes. The White Album mono mix has quite a few difference than the stereo. Ringo doesn't get blisters on his fingers on Helter Sketer for one.

I got the CD mono set in 2009 and haven't been able to listen to the stereo versions since, with the exception of The White Album which is superior to the mono, IMO.

Yeah, the Beatles were much more heavily involved in supervising the mono mixes (which were prepared first) than the stereo mixes, which were at the time mostly an afterthought and gimmicky to them and so they were barely involved in the stereo mixes, up until The White Album at least. I bought the CD mono set in 2009 as well, and I for the most part greatly prefer the mono mixes, they have more power and bite. I even prefer most of The White Album in mono, the mono mixes are what I reach for first when I want to listen to those albums.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

That’s news to me! I wasn’t a Beatles fan until Sgt Pepper and thought certainly by Magical Mystery Tour that they were recorded in stereo.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Also, the songs Only A Northern Song,All Together Now, Hey Bulldog and It's All Too Much from the Yellow Submarine album were originally only released in stereo. They were mixed in mono back then but weren't released until 2009 on the Mono Masters disc 2.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

That's great news! I also bought the mono CD set, but really wanted at least a few of the mono vinyl releases (Sgt. Pepper and Revolver, at a minimum).

I bought the stereo vinyl set. The initial set I bought was garbage, with terrible pressings that had non-fill issues. I returned it (Amazon), and the exchanged set was one of the German pressings, which was perfect.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

The Beatles MONO set sold out aleady on the US store. Probable more will be added later.
