Weird thing though ... this is what the LP looked like from the store I ordered it. I mean, it's similiar, but pretty different to me. Is variance in splatter this normal?

There are a lot of complaints from people with hopw the colors look on vinyl - the new queens of the stone age vinyl comes in four limited color editions and a lot of people have shown the differences from the product they received and what was promised - it's nothing too crazy but definitely very noticeable - I bough the silver one but haven't opened it yet.

They seem to have tons of inventory at the best prices you can find, plus an added 20% off if you buy 5 or more. They have 99.6% feedback rating, but there's a couple negatives that are a little concerning. They seem to accuse them of selling bootlegs. I just wasn't aware of anything like that for vinyl records. Is it possible they're selling off remainders with that type of stock?

I'm taking my chance on a first time Discogs seller, no feedback. It's for a rare reggae record, at a decent price ($20), he's not making outrageous claims like it's "mint" or anything, he's giving it a VG+ rating. We'll see.

Yeah, it's normal. You can get a lot variance in splatter vinyl or any other kind of multicolored vinyl. It's kind of a crap shoot as to what any of these multicolored records will look like. Sometimes the splatter will be asymmetrical or blotchy. The photo you posted of yours looks really good.

Yeah, splatter vinyl is always a crap shoot. But I think joeblow's vinyl pictured looks great!

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Finally got my player today. I love it - it's nothing great (spent about 150 bucks) but it sure does make my records sound great.

I noticed I was getting a ton of Charlie Brown-like teacher feedback though. I use an adapter for the read and white jacks to convert to HDMI (my soundbar doesn't have the basic AV jacks, only HDMI in and out) and it was driving me nuts as my player is on its own stand and there is no vibration - it's a bit close to the soundbar but I moved the soundbar many feet away and was still getting it - turns out it has something to do with the surround sound. When I turn it off, the feedback pretty much goes way in full. I of course lose some sound quality as well but I noticed that there is dropoff as well when surround sound is on - not all the time and it mainly seems to be with some vinyls I have from the 80's.

But I have to say, and roll your eyes if you want. I MUCH prefer how vinyl sounds to other formats - it just sounds more clear and full to me.

Unless you’re listening to quadraphonic records, where does the surround sound come from?

Josh-da-man 07-04-23 12:50 AM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

If you're listening to plain stereo records through a surround system, doesn't the surround just duplicate the left and right channels?

Seems like, maybe, if Rival11 using an RCA-to-HDMI, then running it into a soundbar, there's some feedback or interference getting introduced somewhere down the line. I think I'd most suspicious of the RCA>HDMI converter.

Rival11 07-04-23 10:21 AM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah, It seems like it is the converter.

X: exactly and that explains some of the drop-off.

Either way, I love it, sounds great. Just waiting on my storage case to arrive before I start opening the rest of my albums up.

I have a surround system in my car that can be turned on and off. It's fine when playing 5.1 source material but when I try using surround on with stereo music it's hit or miss whether the synthesized surround sounds good or hollow. Mostly hollow.

cultshock 07-04-23 04:04 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Yeah, when I first got a turntable, the sound was really off, but then I thought of turning off all surround effects on my receiver to just get 2-channel stereo, it sounded much better.

Did anyone else pick up the limited edition of Jack White's Fear of the Dawn album (very cheap on amazon)?? This is one colored vinyl that definitely comes as advertised.

I don’t buy a ton of albums in general anymore let alone on vinyl. My friend got me this as a gift though as an early bachelor party gift. Pretty cool. I also bought Foo Fighters: Medicine At Midnight earlier in the year.

Rival are you sure you don’t need a preamp? Lots of receivers don’t have a phono input and can’t process the signal correctly.
I can’t remember how much mine was. I’ve had it for 15 years. I’d guess close to $40.

I don't, my player has a built im preamp. Turns out its the soundbar itself that's the problem. All I had to do was move the sound bar a bit further away from the player and all feedback stopped.

But with that said. I just purchased some Ediifier bookshelf speakers. The soundbar definitely is enough but I'm having a shitload of fun getting back into vinyl and I want to see how good the new speakers will be.

You might as well go all out and get an old-school receiver too, one that is true analog. Stuff from the 70s sounds fantastic, they were always designed with vinyl in mind, and there's no artificial digital BS happening. No "Hall simulator" where you can make the room sound like an opera house or whatever. Just the sound on the record, amplified, sent to the speakers. Plus, those 70s receivers have a gorgeous "retro" look to them, they're a conversation piece even if you're not playing anything on them at the time.

I'm still keeping my eyes open for a nice vintage receiver, I've found some contenders, but not "the one" as of yet.

I had hopes of picking up a Fisher tube receiver, but they suddenly got very popular, and prices went through the roof.

I still have my old (but not 'classic' years) Marantz receiver. I think it was released around 1979.

One of these days, I'll refoam my Audiosphere Research speakers, and listen to my 'high school' days system, again. :D

Paff 07-12-23 12:16 PM

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Ah yeah, those classic Marantz receivers are real beauts. Pricey too unfortunately. But just a quick perusal of what's available to me locally on the 'list, a lot of ridiculously priced stuff, some crap, but one 70s era Pioneer going for $325 that I bet would rock the roof off, so I don't think a person would have to search too long to find something decent. Me, I got my Harman Kardon 330c that's been working great since I replaced the capacitors and a lot of the transistors in the phono module a few years ago (it was also working great before I did this but it was Covid quarantine and I was bored), I'm good for a while. It needs some of the lamps replaced but no rush on that.

I have an old Marantz 4400 quad receiver with oscilloscope and I'm shocked seeing how much they go for these days.

I just looked up what those look like, very nice, and yeah prices are nuts. I definitely would like a receiver with a oscilloscope, those are cool!

Re: The VINYL Thread!

Best I could get locally (today) is a Marantz 2220b that the guy wants $580 for. I'm sure it sounds great, even at just 20W RMS (which is what my HK produces) but $580 is a little steep.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

So, I have finally resolved my sound issues.

I would highly recommend everyone to stay far away from using a soundbar (even if it has the RCA jacks). The issue with my soundbar wasn't with the RCA to HDMI adapter, it was because the soundbar was too close to the player - which would be fine but I don't have the setup (well, I guess Ido) for putting my record player on the other side of the room.

I received the edifier speakers and I can't believe I paid 200 bucks for them. I immediately packed them up and shipped them back to amazon....garbage.

I then though, why did I get rid of my Cerwin Vega tower speakers and receiver in the first place......and it was because I thought going with smaller footprint with a soundbar would be better. Nope. I will never cheap out with sound again. I hooked up my receiver and Cerwin Vega home speakers and my records sound amazing - no feedback issues unless I crank the volume VERY high which my ears can't take anyway. I bought these speakers in 2003 and I can't kill them, your ears will blow out before the speakers do.

Feel a little dumb as I never knew I can adjust certain settings on my speakers from the receiver either to bring the sound "to the front more" keep in mind I'm only running on 2 channel but to be fair to me, the settings were found under "test tone" in the menu and I just simply didn't know what that meant.

Yes, I agree as well on the old school Marantz receivers as well but like others have said, they are way too expensive.

Regardless, now I'm fully setup and love it. the bass hits very nice with my new setup and the music overall just seems to stand out more if that makes any sense.
