The Flaming Lips -- "The Terror" -- 4/02/13

"We want, or wanted, to believe that without love we would disappear, that love, somehow, would save us that, yeah, if we have love, give love and know love, we are truly alive and if there is no love, there would be no life. The Terror is, we know now, that even without love, life goes on... we just go on… there is no mercy killing."
-Wayne Coyne
Track list:
1. "Look…The Sun Is Rising" 5:13
2. "Be Free, a Way" 5:13
3. "Try to Explain" 5:00
4. "You Lust" (feat. Phantogram) 13:05
5. "The Terror" 6:20
6. "You Are Alone" 3:47
7. "Butterfly, How Long It Takes to Die" 7:21

The last album of theirs I liked was Yoshimi. I hope this can bring back the magic that once was The Flaming Lips.

I second that sentiment. Every album after Yoshimi has been a real disappointment IMO. Im going to have low expectations on this one.

Luckily I saw them live five or six times in the late 90's and early 00's. Those shows were something special.

Same here. AWWTM grows on me the more I listen to it.
I haven't liked their rough, jam-band sound of these past few years. From what I've read, this is supposed to be a pretty dark album, which is just fine so long as it's not just another ball of noise like Embryonic was.

I love everything Flaming Lips. I even like Telepathic Surgery. Can't wait for this.

I made a thread about this album a long time ago, this one is much better auto.
I just listened to this album and I really, really like it. It's my favorite Lips record so far.
There are probably going to be a lot of disappointed Lips fans out there but I think this is definitely their most mature work yet. It's very different from what they have done in the past but I don't think it will alienate the fans that really appreciate the experimental side of the band.
It's very spacey and there are not many jams at all. The album flows nicely and every piece compliments the others quite well. That bands love of Krautrock really shines on this album.

Now this has me excited. I've been disappointed in their output lately so this gives me hope.
Also I'm going to see them live for the first time in 9-10 years, so I hope their live shows are still as good as I remember.

Guess I'm in the minority on the later work, but I think this band has been pumping out their best work from Yoshimi onwards. Clearly, I'm looking forward to the new pup.

I thought Embryonic was their best until this one. I liked how expansive it was. There were certainly things I didn't like about it but the spacey stuff I loved. That album was heading more in the direction of the type of music I like most. I think this new album sounds like the best stuff from Embryonic.
Now, having said all that I'm not the biggest Lips fan. I thought Yoshimi was good but nowhere near as good as everyone else thought it was. I think they have only gotten better since then.
I believe that hardcore Lips fans will probably dislike this one.

Nice someone else out there feels the same way I do about their newer work being best. I would never slag someone for liking their earlier work since it's quite different. I remember programming the Lips first album for our campus station back in 1986. Followed them through every phase and quite happily surprised to see what they've turned into.

This is the first time I've liked a new Flaming Lips album since 2002. It's not their best (I think that will always be the one-two punch of Clouds Taste Metallic and The Soft Bulletin), but it's really good.

I was hoping that I wouldn't be the only one around these parts.

The Flaming Lips are my 4th favorite artist of all-time and I can't really think of anything that I haven't liked by them and I don't expect that to change with this release. I am holding off hearing anything until I get the CD in my hands. I have seen them 4 times and while each show has been great I am hoping they really mix it up with this album.
