The Civil Wars

After The Civil Wars had such a big 2012, it was pretty disappointing to find out in November that they were going on hiatus. I met them in 2011 and they seemed very nice and normal. Glad to hear they might still be producing new stuff.

Civil Wars Hint at New Music
Band had canceled tour dates to iron out 'internal discord'
December 21, 2012 10:05 AM ET

After canceling all tour dates last month over "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition," folk duo the Civil Wars have hinted on Twitter about new music. Joy Williams said in a Twitter interview with singer-songwriter Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy that she was in the studio listening to new Civil Wars songs, and manager Nate Yetton, Williams' husband, posted a photo of a recording session. Neither Williams nor bandmate John Paul White were pictured.

Despite their inner turmoil, the Civil Wars had still expressed hopes to release new music in 2013, and will put out an Unplugged session in iTunes on January 15th. The Grammy winners are up for two more awards for their track "Safe and Sound" with Taylor Swift on The Hunger Games soundtrack, and have also been nominated for a Golden Globe.

Re: The Civil Wars

an unplugged session? when were they plugged??

i enjoy their music....but find it odd to give up after one great album. i'll be shocked if they come up with something new after cancelling all of their tour dates.

I thought she wanted to have babies, and he wanted to keep touring to avoid his wife.

Re: The Civil Wars

What unreal chemistry this band has on stage. I hope they can get past this current riff between them.

It would be a damn shame if they don't.

Re: The Civil Wars

It's too bad, I like their music but I doubt we will see anything new from them after this for a while, if at all.

Re: The Civil Wars

One good album is more than could be said for the majority of acts, even if they break up after this one.

Re: The Civil Wars

Wow, I didn't know any of this. How sad and unfortunate. I loved their first album and that Hunger Games song. If she goes to the press and outright says "We aren't on speaking terms right now", things must be REALLY bad between them. What a shame.

Re: The Civil Wars

cliche as it is, i get chills when i hear them sing together.

when they came out i don't anyone aside from mumford, and avett bros were doing americana in the mainstream. now it seems like every goddamn band out of brooklyn is wearing a cravat and playing a banjo.

It's true though!

I saw them at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz, CA back in 2011. Their chemistry & voices gave everyone in the room chills. The purity/simplicity of their performance was also something I loved. JP & Joy + a Guitar. No fancy backdrops, 52 member bands/groups, etc.

One of my friends who went to the show with me came very unsure of the band. By the end of the show he was in love with them.

Re: The Civil Wars

New album is streaming in iTunes. I played it yesterday and loved it, but I haven't heard all of the debut to form an opinion about comparing the two.

Re: The Civil Wars

Whoa, I wasn't expecting the cover at 31:55 mark.

I guess it's not that surprising if you follow the band.

You mean the cover of "Disarm" ? I follow the band and have no idea what the 31:55 thing means..

Re: The Civil Wars

I'm definitely liking the first half of the new album. I don't think it ends well, though.

Don't really care for the last 2 songs, and Track 10 (Disarm) is not nearly as good as their live covers of that song I have mp3s of.

Still a good record. I hope this isn't their last album.

Re: The Civil Wars

This should debut in the Top 5 albums in the country next week when the charts come out.

I initially thought it would go No. 1 if there wasn't a superstar releasing a record or something, but I still think it'll do well. Getting really good reviews from critics across the board, too.

Very interesting interview with Joy Williams:

Joy Williams tries to explain the Civil Wars break-up: 'It's been a hard, painful season of my life'

I'm starting to think they had an affair. After seeing them live in early 2012, she flirts with him like she wants to fuck him. Unless she's the greatest actress (hint: she's not) then it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I've rarely seen this type of intimate and sexually-charged chemistry on stage.

Yeah, that would be enough to break up a band. Especially since he has 4 kids and is married. I didn't realize he's 40 and she's only 30.
