Jazz great Dave Brubeck dies
Dec. 5, 2012, 11:58 AM EST
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Pioneering jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck has died.
Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's manager, says he died Wednesday morning of heart failure, after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son. He would have turned 92 on Thursday.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet's pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms and became enduring standards.
In 1954 he was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine.
The quartet's 1959 album "Time Out" was the first ever million-selling jazz LP. "Take Five," a cut from that album by saxophonist Paul Desmond, became the group's signature theme.

I've owned Time Further Out for quite a while but not listened to it nearly as often as Time Out. Listening today based on this thread and enjoying it.

My dad had Time Out on vinyl. I bought it on CD. It's all I know about Brubeck, but what an amazing album it is.
One obit said that Columbia sat on Time Out for a year before releasing it. They didn't think anyone would buy a record without songs people could dance to.

He was a great one.
I like Dave Brubeck's scene in the 1962 movie All Night Long. His entrance was completely artificial and just an excuse to get him in the movie, but then he starts playing and it's truly amazing. He's so effortless at the piano that it's mesmerizing to watch him play.

"Time Out" is one of those albums that always sells well, although his death is upping the number more now. It's one of the handful of jazz albums that it seems almost everyone owns.
And "Take Five" is easily the most popular song on the album, but my favorite song on the album is "Blue Rondo à la Turk" (which is the opening track on the album).

I was always surprised Time Out was Brubeck's most popular album. At Carnegie Hall was by far his best. So many classics on that album, but I tend to prefer live jazz albums to the studio recordings. Time Out is only okay in my opinion, especially from that era. Certainly it was influential though. But I recommend Carnegie Hall heartily to anyone who doesn't own it.
