Not sure who this generation's Peter Gabriel is, uh...Nick Jonas?
LOL

Prince is good but how many of his songs hit the billboard top 10 singles chart since the early 90's?

He is probably trying to be less mainstream these days.

Nobody will ever write a song like Games without Frontiers or I Don't Remember

Recently I bought the first four Gabriel solo albums and have been working my way through a new one every few weeks. Some of the songs on the first two albums were pretty fantastic but the entirety of "Melt" just blew me away. Every song is damn near amazing. Just started getting into "Security" and that one seems to be following suit.

Anyhow, enough about me. Both of these musicians followed their own path and had a pretty substantial amount of critical and commercial success.

So, the purpose of this thread:

In today's musical landscape will we ever see another musician push boundaries and also experience this type of commercial success?

Do any current artists even fit the bill? I'm guessing not. Hell, I'm struggling to even think of a similiar current musician that has found critical, much less commercial, success.

So, what do you think? Better yet, is their an artist out there today I'm missing?
A better question is will we ever see another Peter Hammill, a man who is largely unrecognized yet indelibly influenced Bowie AND Gabriel while having a hand in developing the frontiers of Prog Rock, Metal, and Punk.

Probably could have posted that without quoting the OP.

Been listening to Van der Graaf Generator recently on Spotify for the first time. Pretty interesting group. I'm going to delve into their stuff more.

Yeah, but where's the fun in that??

I definitely recommend checking out Pawn Hearts and Godbluff. Some of Hammill's solo stuff is essentially VdGG with a slightly more personal side (a few of his albums have the whole band backing him), check out In Camera and Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night especially. Nadir's Big Chance was a huge influence on the Sex Pistols, that is worth checking out, too (well, all his 70s output is).

Re: Will we ever experience another David Bowie or Peter Gabriel?

Has anybody here bought tickets for the Peter Gabriel and Sting co-headlining tour?

Did not know they were touring together.

Sting and Peter Gabriel played Rock Paper Scissors.

And guess who came out on top? It was the fans.

The two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers delivered nearly three hours of classic material when they brought their Rock Paper Scissors North American Tour to the SAP Center in San Jose on Thursday.

This was not a case where two headliner-caliber artists played two distinct sets, separated, of course, by a 30-minute break so fans can go drop more money on beer and T-shirts. Instead, it was one epic, fully integrated set, as the two Englishmen shared vocals, songbooks and bands.

Just saw this show at Lake Tahoe, it was fantastic. Maybe having front row center seats made it even better, but Sting and Peter rocked the place.

Had a couple friends who went to the Hollywood Bowl show - they said it was amazing, but they like Sting, whereas he puts me to sleep.

After seeing the set lists from those shows, I wish I had gone. I've seen both live individually.

I saw Sting with Paul Simon, but this sounds like maybe a more fitting combo.

A friend of mine is seeing the PG/Sting show in Seattle tonight. I texted her asking how it's been, and she texted back:
"Sting just sang the opening verse to 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight'... segueing into 'Message in a Bittle'. I'm drowning in a pool of tears. Eeeeee!"

Re: Will we ever experience another David Bowie or Peter Gabriel?

Interesting thread bump after 4 years.

As a baby boomer, it would be easy for me to say no, never, not a chance, but I am more optimistic than that. I don't know who it will be and it probably won't be anyone in the current crop of musicians, but it probably will happen eventually.

As for someone like Kanye West, he's no Prince, but I do like his music even though I'm embarrassed to admit it. The Taylor Swift incident and his marriage into the Kardashian clan are still cringe worthy.

I actually think Kanye is a pretty solid choice.

1) Critically acclaimed
2) Commercially successful
3) Larger than life, well known by the public

I'm sure some will scoff but his body of work is pretty flawless, IMO.

I don't disagree, but I'd add:
"songs/albums that no one will listen to in 5 years".
Hip-hop just tends to have a shorter shelf-life than almost all other kinds of music.

I heard Sting singing that was a reaction to Brexit which makes sense:

I think Graduation and My Dark Twisted Beautiful Fantasy both have serious longevity.

Kayne West really?

Can the average joe on the street name one of his songs?

At least with Gabriel you have heard of Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes, and Big Time and even people that don't know his work probably was exposed to his music somewhere in their lives.

Sledgehammer and Shock the Monkey are classic/80's rock fixtures.

I was actually sort of impressed with what I heard of Kanye's Yeezus album. Not that I was necessarily digging it. In fact I thought it was a hard listen, but I liked the fact he was really experimenting and trying to stretch the genre. People count him out too casually because it's rap, and because he's a colossal toolbag, but while he may not be the next Peter Gabriel or Bowie, he may well end up influencing them.

You haven't seen any trailers for a rom com or family dramedy made in the last fifteen years? If so, then you've heard this song:

Not to mention "In Your Eyes", from Say Anything, and all it's spoofs. No way anyone older than 20 not living in a cave wouldn't have heard it repeatedly by now.
