Info for Flaming Lips fans (New Album)
It's not much but hey it's something. I figured that fans would be interested to know.
The new Lips album should be released around January of next year. The album clocks in somewhere around 45 minutes and is comprised of 9 long-ish songs. Apparently it has the spacey elements of Embryonic but not some of the harsher, jarring, heavy stuff. Apparently Warner Bros. was not happy with the album when they heard it and wanted something a little more commercial to coincide with the musical. At one point when the bill showed up for the recording sessions Warner Bros. refused to pay for it.
That's a little something that I hope tides hardcore fans.

I wasn't too big on Embryonic, it's a tough album to listen to, jarring is an appropriate description. That doesn't mean I want them to make Yoshimi 2, I like how they keep changing their sound and challenging the audience.

Yeah, Embryonic wasn't for me. But I don't want them to do stuff for the record company.
Like most bands in this day and age, they make their money touring. As long as their music doesn't turn away crowds then do what you want. I'd still go to their live show in a minute.

I'm not into the rough, jam session sound of Embryonic and some of their other newer stuff.
I liked the more poppy Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, and even At War With the Mystics much better.

In what is apparently a dissenting opinion around here, I really liked Embryonic.

Embryonic is my favorite Flaming Lips release. As far as money and touring goes, I would think they would tour more extensively. Maybe I am just unaware, but they dont' seem to do a large amount of shows, at least not around here. I don't recall them doing a show in Houston in a really long time, save for an opening slot and a couple of festival appearances.

The last time I enjoyed The Flaming Lips was Yoshimi. Everything since then has been a slow and steady decline, imo. I will continue to check out new releases in case they come up with something brilliant again, but each release wears me down a little bit more.

The NSFW video for "The First Time Ever I saw your Face" featuring Amanda Palmer is pretty cool as well.
I didn't care much for Heady Fwends. I liked elements of the individual songs but as a whole I didn't like it. I think the formula worked better when The Lips were releasing the 12"'s featuring several songs with that particular artist.
