I am totally pumped up for some new Muse!

My only issue is this...why are so many established acts jumping on the dubstep bandwagon NOW? The time for that was a decade ago, not now.

For a band that likes to position themselves as so forward thinking, it's kind of a step back to anyone other than the people who think that dubstep is something new instead of realizing that it was played-out more than 5 years ago.

Nice. The Resistance was a big letdown after the amazing "Black Holes & Revelations"

Agreed. Hope this is a return to form.

Another hope for a return to form. The Resistance had a few good tracks, but quite a few lesser ones as well. It did have United States of Eurasia, which may be my favorite Muse song of all.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

Can't wait for this one either. I actually like The Resistance quite a bit. I had never really listened to them much although I owned their earlier works. It was pretty much "Uprising" that drew me in. Now that I've completely saturated myself with all their stuff, it's obvious Absolution is their best work, but I still like everything they've done.

I wonder what the chances are this trailer is simply intro music for the album or a red herring? I can't see them doing a whole record like this.

Sounds like an intro if I ever heard one.

Did you hear the epic arrangement it was proceeded by? It only made up 30 seconds of the clip and honestly not that far off from the jam stuff they end up doing live. Also, when has Muse even done an album where everything sounded the same? I don't think the "dupstep album" worries are too warranted as of yet.

I can't fucking wait. Hope they hit the states for a tour in the Spring or something. Imma follow them around like an 18 year old groupie.

bunkaroo 06-07-12 10:23 AM

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

I'm hoping the tour comes around while it would still call for indoor venues. I hate the sound at whatever they call the venue in Tinley Park now.

lol. Dubstep courtesy of the guitar and what I assume is Matt's Kaos Pad. I love that, its like he did it for no other reason than to do it haha

Ohhhh... excited to hear about this one. The Resistance wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it a lot and I have faith that this one'll be good too.

I listened to 'The Resistance' at least twice, it never impressed me, huge hopes for the new album.

You guys are nuts. The Resistance was fantastic, beginning to end.

If "The Resistance was fantastic, you've probably never heard the "Absolution" album....

Oh come on it's not that bad. I'll take Resistance over Showbiz or OoS any day.

I haven't been listening to them since their beginning or even the Absolution era, so can those who were seriously explain what is so bad about Resistance?

Labor 06-09-12 07:26 PM

Ive been a fan of Muse since Showbiz in 1999...

Resistance absolutely trashes Absolution as an album

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

I actually think Absolution would be a stronger record if it ended after "Butterflies & Hurricanes". The last four tracks almost seem like "extra tracks" to me, as none of them are nearly as strong as the preceding tracks. The flow from the intro to B&H is probably the most consistently great stretch on any Muse album though.

2012 Olympics theme "Survival"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt__jKWoYH8

Strings, falsettos, riffage and solos, over the top backing vocals, "we will survive!" type lyrics

Well that was underwhelming. Liked the intro and the solo but not much else.

"Absolution" is pretty much perfection start to finish. Next two studio releases have been pale by comparison and attempts to go commercial that failed. Not that optimistic that the new one will not continue that trend.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

This comes out Oct 2nd officially.

3 songs from the album have been released so far.

Madness- This song sucks
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ek0SgwWmF9w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Survival- Also bad
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/66molzUEkWI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The 2nd Law: Unsustainable- This song is at least interesting, but I wouldn't say it's good. Certainly better than the other two.

Hate to say it as I'm a fan of Muse, but it looks like they peaked with Black Holes and Revelations

I have a feeling I'll grow into it. Not thrilled about the dub step crap though.

Gotta give them points for at least trying something different instead of releasing an album called More Black Holes and Even More Revelations.

that I'd buy at a heartbeat, the new songs are underwhelming to say the least.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

I find that interesting considering a band like Muse made some great records in the past because they were pushing envelopes and experimenting. You really can't expect a band like that to just start phoning it in. Some experiments will be failures on various levels, but I still think it's good they're trying to reinvent themselves every record.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

you can make an argument either way. Why fix what's not broken?

Anyway what they did on The Resistance and now apparently The 2nd Law is not working. That doesn't mean I want them to go back to something they did before, but again, IMO this isn't good. This is another step in the wrong direction.

I'll wait to hear the whole thing before giving an opinion, but the stuff above really tempers my expectations for this one. Bummer.

Madness reminds me of Queen. I could definitely see them playing that song during the '80s or even in the early '90s.

As did quite a bit of the last album IMO. Disliked it a lot a first for the most part, but it grew on me a lot.

Well that's basically the difference between musicians who do it primarily for the love of music and those who do it primarily for the paycheck I think. Why didn't da Vinci just paint the Mona Lisa over and over and over again?

My guess is Muse are quite comfortable where they're at and decided to use the opportunity to do something different again.

That said, I'm not crazy about what I've heard so far either, but I am still open to liking it. Of course I'm also one of those nutjobs who liked The Resistance.

It's always interesting watching these threads when an artist releases a new album. If they do something different, you have fans stating "why did they have to change their sound? make the same music you've been making and make me happy." And then if they were to release a new album that sounds like every other album they released you'd have other people saying "make something different. Every album sounds the same."

It's like bands/artists can't win at times. They are damned if they do something different and damned if they don't.

I'll wait until I can hear the whole album. I generally liked Resistance and the new songs aren't that bad. Different, but the will likely grow on me.

Without commenting on the new Muse album (I haven't heard it), sometimes it depends on whether what they do is good. U2 and Radiohead definitely gained a lot of respect and commercial success by changing their sound.

Supremacy and Panic Station are fantastic. Liquid State sounds like a Foo Fighters song. The rest of the album leaves me cold thus far.

Supremacy sounds like a Bond theme. In fact I theorize it was made in case they got asked and then they weren't.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

This album is a piece of shit. The Muse that brought us Origin of Symmetry and Absolution clearly don't exist anymore.

The moment that I wanted to shut off the album was listening to Big Freeze because it sounded like Matt Belamy raping Michael Hutchence's corpse.
