Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

I've only scanned through the album so far, and all I'll say at this point is it's certainly...different.

I recall being disappointed with The Resistance after I first got it, too. In fact, I've barely even listened to since it came out. However, giving it a spin last week in anticipation of the new album, I've now decided I don't know what I was thinking back then. It's a much better record than I initially gave it credit for.

Guess we'll have to see if it's the same for this one, too.

The Resistance feels more focused in its attempt to try new stuff compared to 2nd Law.

I'll enjoy 2nd Law more as it becomes etched in memory, but I'd like to see a focused, sharp rock record their next time out.

His voice isn't bad, just not remarkable in any way. Animals is also pretty good. Besides those 3, the rest range from listenable to shit. Panic Station is just fucking awful and the worst thing I think they have ever put on an album. Follow Me isn't far behind.

Agree with you about "Panic Station". What the fuck!?? Worst...Muse.....song......EVER!

At least we can all agree that Kate Hudson is to blame right?

The moment that I wanted to shut off the album was listening to Big Freeze because it sounded like Matt Belamy raping Michael Hutchence's corpse.

oh what terrible imagery I now have in my head.

I love Pitchfork.

And titans shall clash as Bellamy speaks with the conviction of a man who is either going to tell us they'll never take our freedom or to release the kraken. With dramatic flair, he intones "your true emancipation is a fantasy," which... OK. But "the time..." Go on. "...it has come," that "it," perfect. "To destrooooyyyyyy..." Destroy what? Make sure you put your drink down as Bellamy screams "YOUR SUPREMACYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!" because all of a sudden having The 2nd Law only in audio form feels pathetically inadequate-- next time you will place it against footage from Starship Troopers, although the closest visual equivalent to this batshit moment is a dinosaur with a cowboy hat manning a F-15 and blowing evil aliens to bits while scoring the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. That's not even the most ludicrous part-- wait until that bit of spy guitar comes in at the end, bearing no melodic resemblance to what just transpired and inferring Muse believes they've made their James Bond theme. No, really.

I love how we can't even agree on what songs to hate.

My expectations were so low I kind of enjoyed it on first listen in an over the top ridiculous way. I'm completely okay with the fact that the band I loved for a few albums is long gone and never coming back.

That being said, the lyrics in Survival are fucking terrible. Just awful.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

Thinking more about Supremacy and Survival, it just seems like there's too much stuff on this record that's there for the sake of being there. I didn't care for Survival when I heard it for the Olympics but I figured since they wrote it for the Olympics it was a one off thing. Nope - it shows up on the album, and early on too.

I get they wanted to do the Bond theme, but Supremacy at best should be an extra track, and certainly not the opener of the album.

Then you have Chris' two personal songs. I like Save Me but I think it was a mistake to give him two lead vocals and stack them back to back. You go from those two to the 2nd Law pieces which are largely instrumental. Basically gives the casual listener no real reason to stick around after the 8th or 9th track.

It just makes me feel like they through whatever they had laying around on the record rather than having a plan.

In general I think the album is poorly laid out and has no flow or direction. I still like pieces of it though.

Re: Muse - The 2nd Law - September 2012

I'm going to go against the grain here. I love the random nature of this album. It's all over the place, and no two songs really sound the same for the most part. It's not perfect, but I am really enjoying this album upon multiple listens.

I don't think they're done. Huge gap from March 10 - April 9 and they've been adding a handful a few times over the last few weeks. I'm betting we see some more.

Grabbed tix for St Louis today and going for Chicago tomorrow.

Got my tix for Los Angeles earlier this morning. Missed out on GA Floor, but nabbed some excellent lower-level seats instead. No backaches, yea! Getting old sucks...

as much as it's a pain to get out to the Patriot Center - I hope they do it like the last show, where the area in front of the stage is general admission and not seated.

Muse could easily sell out the Verizon Center.
