I must disagree about the wretchedness of his music ("The Hell of It" is badass and very different from his other songs), but he was a terrific foil of the Dark Knight:

He always absolutely terrified me as a kid (and kind of still does as an adult) but I do love his songs from Phantom of the Paradise and the stuff he wrote for the Carpenters

As a kid in the '70s, you really couldn't get away from Paul Williams. Seemed like he was on TV every day in one way or another. I'd definitely watch this.

You want to see an interesting doc about a record industry weirdo, see the Mayor of the Sunset Strip about Rodney Bingenheimer. He is an eccentric character and funny enough kind of looks like Paul Williams.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it too. It's funny how Kim Fowley ended up with nearly as much face time as Rodney.
