Record Store Day April 21, 2012 - Discussion thread and poll

Record Store Day is this Saturday. Here's a link to this year's exclusives.

http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases

I added a poll this year with the simple question: Is Record Store Day fun or more like a funeral?

I ask this because I haven't been to a record store since last year's Record Store Day (I can't remember when the last time was that I went to a video or book store either). This strikes me as sad because I always used to enjoy going to record stores when I was younger. That's why I voted funeral.

I voted funeral because I would likely slit my wrists if I had to deal with the shitty, crowded mess that I experienced last year. I'll pass from now on.

I would go, but I am not interested in anything this time out.

I wish they had more CD releases, and I don't have much interest in 45's or 7 inch records. I wish they focused more on CD's and LP's

I did have a good experience last year, but this year there really aren't any exclusives that I'm excited about.

How about a really frustrating scavenger hunt?

No. Shit. It's kind of ironic that this thing started out to get people excited about browsing in record stores again, but it's become about as much fun as a visit to the DMV.

Yet another seemingly cool idea ruined by the e-bay douches.

Re: Record Store Day April 21, 2012 - Discussion thread and poll

All I really want are the Eddie Vedder and The White Stripes singles. I don't have a record store here anyways so unless I find a friend to pick them up for me I'll have to get it online. Although last year Third Man Records sold a version of the singles they put out on their web site online anyways just not the special colored vinyl versions that were exclusives for Record Store Day.

There's going to be a RSD tent at Coachella. I'll see if they have the Bowie 45 exclusive.

Record Store Day - April 21, 2012

Tomorrow is Record Store Day.

The awful slow website can be found here: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

The iPhone App is unusable by the way.

I'm only trying to obtain The Flaming Lips THE FLAMING LIPS AND HEADY FWENDS, maybe the Jay Farrar record, and the Miles Davis record. I'm also considering replacing (or supplementing) my copy of The Misfits Walk Among Us.

But as usual, I expect everything I want to be in the hands of eBay douches by the time I get there.

I'm going to try to hit a local shop in my area. I really want The Civil Wars - Live at Amoeba

I'd kill for the Mastodon/Feist 7"... but I know at least one other person who will snatch it up before I can get to my local record store. Boo.

Re: Record Store Day - April 21, 2012

Thanks for the reminder. I would have forgotten. I really want the M83 7" and the two Mastodon 7"s. The Tomahawk box would be awesome too, but it sounds like that's extremely limited.

My work pal is waiting in line in the wee hours, and I'm asking him to pick me up the DEVO two record live release if he can, but that's the only thing I'm interested in, and not enough to go myself.

I'm gonna try for the Phish Junta 3 LP set

I'd like that Phish album too.

I would never, ever wait in line for any of these things though.

What they should really try and do for RSD is release the exclusives to record stores on Saturday and then have a wider release within a month. This would cut down on the ebayers.

Mike86 04-20-12 04:55 PM

Re: Record Store Day - April 21, 2012

Don't have a record store around me so I'll probably have to try and find what I want online. I'd really like a copy of the Eddie Vedder single because it's recorded from the show that I went to last year. Other than that there's a White Stripes release I'd like but if it's like last year I'm sure Third Man will just release a standard copy on vinyl at a later time.

The concept of this day is a good one but the execution of it kind of sucks overall in my opinion. Just another day for eBay sellers to buy up a bunch of copies of things and sell them for ridiculous prices.

Picked up:

Billy Bragg and Wilco - Mermaid Avenue: the complete sessions
Uncle Tupelo - The Seven Inch Singles box set
Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Blue Suede Shoes b/w Girl I Love You 7"
Blitzen Trapper - Hey Joe b/w Skirts on Fire 7"
Patterson Hood - After It's Gone b/w (unspoken pretties) 7"
Brad - Water's Deep b/w Don't Cry 7"

Got there about an hour and a half after the store opened. Crowded but not too bad.

It's been a crazy day at the record store where I work. We had about 20 people waiting outside before we opened and had a solid checkout line for an hour.

This was our first Record Store Day at the new store we opened last November and it turned out really well.

I would like to find the Lee Hazlewood and Knack releases but who knows if any stores by me will have them. I'm guessing it is hit and miss?

Re: Record Store Day - April 21, 2012

I see that the Knack and Lee will be out on cd very soon. One or two of the songs from the Knack aren't on the cd though.

Local place said they were gone.

I would also like to find the DEVO. Did anyone have luck with these?

I see them all over eBay and wonder what the original prices were for them.

The Knack RSD disc is only a 4 song 10" EP. Two tracks ("Let Me Out", "My Sharona") are from a live show in Los Angeles in '78, while the other two ("Romeo Eyes", "Art War") are rehearsals tracks from Anawalt, also in '78. The CD that's coming out is of the whole Los Angeles show.

I had to go to two stores to find a copy, as they each only got one, and I missed out on it at the first store. Which was also unfortunate, as I had credit at the first store, and it was $3 cheaper there. But, at least I scored a copy. Haven't played it yet, but the vinyl is a multi-color splatter, which looks pretty sweet.

Re: Record Store Day April 21, 2012 - Discussion thread and poll

I suppose I'm glad that "Fun" won the poll. I think the record/media stores around the country can still survive as a places to buy and sell used merchandise. The funeral has already taken place for big box stores like Tower that sell only new product.

I noticed yesterday that at Zia Record Exchange in Las Vegas the used products in the store consisted of probably at least 60% of their inventory.

Anyway, I did pick up the Flaming Lips and Social Distortion LPs and the London Calling remix even though I don't think London Calling needed a re-mix, but I am a Clash completist, so I guess I had to have it.

How much was the Knack? Trying to gauge against the eBay prices.

The first place I wanted to buy it at (Bull Moose Music) was $8.97. Newburry Comics had it for $11.99. I read another forum thread where someone said they paid $16 for their copy at the store they got it from.

I got to the store when it opened at 9 AM and I only saw 2 copies on display. I picked up one of them and a few minutes later, somebody saw it in my hand and asked me where I found it. The other copy was already gone.

Ebay might be your best hope.

I only picked up the Springsteen 45 for my wife. The only other ones I'd have been interested in myself were $15 for a 45 and $22 for a 3 song EP. No way could I justify those prices for anything.

I just wanted the Flaming Lips album. First place, the lady said she just sold the last one before I got there. I ended up buying just the Billy Bragg and Wilco Mermaid Ave Sessions (apparently available everything anyway) and The Civil Wars at Amoeba.

The Phish Junta album was $79.99. That's absurd. I'd never, ever spend that on a record. The second store I went to had like 10 of the Lee Hazlewood LP. Never saw the Misfits record.

I found the Miles Davis record but for $19.99, the package was underwhelming. Didn't appear to be on 180 gm vinyl and the cover was like paper.

What was the retail price of the Flaming Lips album? I'd like to know so I can gauge how much the ebay sellers are gouging me.

I didn't buy it, but I looked at it in store and it was close to $40 (something like $38.99 I think).

I think I'm growing out of RSD, or maybe it's outgrowing me. I went by the two good record stores near me in the late morning and both had massive lines just to get to the RSD-exclusive section, so I left and decided to try later in the day. I went back to one of them at about 2 and still had to wait in a shorter line to see the RSD exclusives. The things I really wanted were gone, some of the things I was considering were more than I was willing to pay (Flaming Lips for one), but I did pick up these exclusives:
Pelican debut album reissue 2xLP
Arcade Fire - Sprawl II remix 10" single
The Clash - London Calling 2012 Mix 7"

I don't know if it's the "eBay douches" coming out of the woodwork or the longer list of exclusives or what, but past RSDs here were never this crazy. In the future it'll take an exclusive I really, really want for me to brave the crowds.

This is exactly what ruins the day if you ask me. I bet half the people who go out and buy things don't actually keep them and probably aren't even fans, but just trying to profit off of people who actually want the items. It sucks.

For vinyl, the two best are Euclid Records in Webster Groves and Vintage Vinyl on the loop, in my opinion.

I remember them both. Glad to hear they are still around. I remember one or two in the Central West End plus one in Kirkwood called Now Hear This. Wonder if he is still open or changed the name. I was thinking maybe he did when he moved from Webster Groves area.

I just stopped by my local store to see if any more copies of the Devo release were hanging around. I saw the Flaming Lips lp there for 30.99 I think.
