Re: Gotye

Anyone else think he sounds like Sting? When I first head "Somebody that I used to know" on the radio I thought Sting was making a strong comeback.

Re: Gotye

Maybe since the young people probably never heard of Sting or Peter Gabriel so they latched on to Goyte.

Re: Gotye

First time I listened to the song, I didn't understand why it was so popular... then it got to the Peter Gabriel part.

Re: Gotye

The first time I heard the song on the radio, which was only about 2 months ago (I don't listen to the radio much), I immediately thought of Peter Gabriel.

Making Mirrors is the Amazon MP3 album of the day, by the way. It's $4.99 today. I listened to the samples and don't like enough of the other songs to buy it, though.

I think Somebody that I used to Know is great, but also don't care for the rest of the album.

My wife has had this song on for the past month or so, constantly playing it. Although I knew it wasn't Sting I asked her why this guy sounds like Sting. She didn't really hear it but after listening a few more times she heard it too.

Very Stingish.

Re: Gotye

I knew about it for a while from the buzz, but didn't really listen to it. When I did, I was hooked, and have been since. I just love it.

Thanks! I was just looking to get this earlier tonight. Didn't want to chance it for ten bucks but this is worth it.

Re: Gotye

It's a great record and worth the $5 for sure. To my ear, Gotye definitely has some Sting qualities on some of his songs and yet Making Mirrors also dives into several genres of music. One song feels like Beck, another has a Stevie Wonder vibe, and so on. I dig his exploring different ways of doing music and offering up something diverse all on one album.

Re: Gotye

What's up with the remix version being the only version being played on the radio these days though?

Crazy huh? The remix is a novelty but I'm surprised it's the cut played.

I didn't like anything I heard from Goyte. one of the worst things out in music right now IMO.

Have you heard the band 317? They suck even more. Especially the lead "rapper".

HA HA I feel exactly the same. Amazing what passes for outstanding pop songs these days. Robert Pollard could write 10 songs better than this before breakfast.

I was hooked on the song from the first time I heard it. I was driving and heard it on Sirius. My buddy was in the passenger seat and I gave him my phone to download it right then. I still really like it and listen to it often. I planned on buying the album, but listened to parts of every other song on itunes and pretty much hated every one.

It was pretty much the exact opposite of my experience with Mumford and Sons like a year ago or so--probably longer than that but I can't remember exactly. Again, I was driving and I heard Little Lion Man and loved it. I immediately downloaded it and when I got home checked out the other songs on the album and either loved or liked almost all of them so I downloaded that album.

I was totally clueless about both Mumford and Sons and Gotye, but Gotye turned out to be a one and done for me, while Sigh No More is one of my favorite albums and I'm eagerly waiting for Mumford and Sons next album to come out. I'll probably just buy it without even sampling it.

By the way, I always pronounce it Goy-ta...like goiter, but goi-ta. I know that's wrong, but I'm too stubborn to change.

Proud of it? No. I just don't care enough to put any amount of effort into getting the name right.

He may fade from the mega popularity of the mainstream, but with the solid albums he makes, he's definitely getting longer than 5 minutes. People may be sick to death of "Somebody That I Used To Know" but that doesn't change the fact that his current record has at least 7 excellent tracks on it.

Re: Gotye

Gotye in video game terms means Game of the Year Edition. For some reason, that's what pops into my head when I see this thread.

Not really a fact. An opinion held by few.
