a great NPR piece on how much it costs to make a hit song

http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/...ng?sc=fb&cc=fp
This is mainly for the pop singers who don't write their own music. The example they used was Rihanna's Man Down which for all the promotion and hype, hasn't done so well on the chart
Here was the big chart they made
the article also has an audio version if you don't wanna have to read 7 pages

Title should read "How shit is piled on the American public and why they eat it like it's Filet Mignon"

Based upon that logic, wouldn't an album for a popster cost anywhere from $10 million and onward?

If sales are declining, based upon that logic, the music industry would be completely bankrupt.

using the logic, it only costs a million bucks if its a single. If the song sells over a million digital downloads, it be fine.

this is like it was done back in the 60's and everyone loves that era. How many songs did Elvis write?

Seems like there's a very obvious item that could be removed.

Because iTunes doesn't take any cut from that $.99... right?

Wait so radio stations get paid by record companies to play certain songs? Mind blown.

/sarcasm

Another thought on it, Rihanna does deserve to be paid last. She should probably just be paid a one time fee and not receive any residuals.

Re: a great NPR piece on how much it costs to make a hit song

I remember a few years ago there was the whole "f---s for tracks" discussion going on about how some people like Rihanna, Katy Perry and others get the pick of the litter of the songs other people write.

I think that The KLF proved in "The Manual....." that it's probably alot cheaper and easier than that, and I tend to agree with them.
