Re: Why do radio stations edit songs?
Blue Monday came on the radio the other day when I was in the car with my mom. Just as I turned the volume up, the song started to fade out during the second verse.
There is a perfectly fine 7" mix that runs about four minutes, but they decided to play half of the 12" mix.

There are definitely a lot of cases where the song is edited for time, though every once in a while I wonder if it's for content. It seems to be a mix these days, but I remember that for a while, "Lightning Crashes" by Live had the verse about the placenta edited out on the radio. Was it because too many parents had to explain what a placenta is to their kids or because it's easy to cut a verse for time? I dunno...

Two high profile examples I can think of off the top of my head:
Prince-1999
Virtually everyone knows this song, it's a radio staple, but the version that's played on the radio and featured on all of Prince's hits packages is the single version. The version on the album is different. Not extremely different, but slightly and it has a spoken intro. The single version isn't a "radio edit" but nevertheless...

My favorite was a decade or however long ago when I was driving cross-country. Somewhere in Alabama, a station was playing "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks with the word "bitch" censored. As many times as I heard that song on the radio that summer, that's the only time I'd heard it like that.

Welcome to my childhood growing up in Alabama.

I've noticed that. I grew up listening mainly to the radio for music, and when I finally picked up the CD years later, there's so many songs that sounded "off" and this is likely the reason.
