one great thing about secrets is no one gets to hear them
let's hope that is the case with a new Metallica project

I've always felt Cliff was a little overrated - never really cared for his sound. And I'm a bassist! But I did like his bass parts.
I think Cliff Burton added more behind the scenes than we realize. Not only were all the band members very close to him, he did more to guide the band musically than is generally acknowledged. Lars' influence has steadily grown over the years, and that's their biggest problem. The Some Kind of Monster documentary proved that pretty well.

It will be a spoken word album, with them debating Versace versus Armani.

They will also launch a blog called G00P, and claim to have come up with the concept first because theirs uses "zeros, not O's. Zeros are more metal"

Actually it's clear that Ulrich and Hetfield have always been the creative powers of theb and since it's inception as they were the ones who up until the last couple albums had ultimate and final say over songs/lyrics/music and they saw the other memebrs as little more then hired players, in the band to add guitar solos and bass tracks. This was true even when Cliff was in the band.

Metallica has been the James & Lars Show since its inception, they have acknowledged Cliff's influence on music before in interviews. Specifically, he was the one that got them into listening to classical music and opened their eyes (er... ears) to hearing music from other genres and letting it influence their own songwriting.

Take the bridge / pre-solo part of Master of Puppets, for example. While Cliff didn't actually write the song, it's clearly the work of someone who's listened to a bit of Wagner, which you can attribute to Cliff's influence.

I thought this was pretty well known -- Cliff's understanding of music theory and his influence on the band.

Apparently Cliff influenced Metallica in other ways as well:

Agreed, but even at their best Metallica couldn't touch Mercyful Fate, imo.

Guys, we all know Dave Mustaine was the biggest influence on Metallica, since he wrote all of their best material

Hmmm, Master of Puppets v. Melissa. Damn tough call.

To me the real tough call is And Justice For All vs. Don't Break The Oath.

Looks like we're hitting all the Metallica nerves in this thread. Mustaine's influence is unmistakeable on Kill Em All. However, without a substance abuse problem, Megadeth might never have been born. Mercyful Fate is a band that I can only take in small doses. There are some days when I put on Melissa and it is firing on all cylinders for me. However, more often, if I am not "in the right mood," his voice tends to grate on my nerves. Nonetheless, their sound was very original at the time. I'll have to give "Don't Break the Oath" another try because it never really clicked with me. However, I liked King Diamond's solo work.

This one is better

As a Metallica fan, I think they should chill for a bit and REALLY give us an old school album. I know they wanted that with DM, and for me it's a good album that I enjoy most of. But I would really like a heavy metal album from them that can compare to say Ride or Master. Can it happen ? I think they are more than capable of doing it if they put forth the effort. Forget about changing with the times and all that junk. Go back and do what you did when you made those first albums.

They already did that. Doesn't anyone remember the song they did with Ja Rule for some movie soundtrack?

Actually, it's probably best if we all forget.
