Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" BANNED in Canada, eh!
Winnipeg Free Press
As I sit here, drinking my Tim Hortons coffee, and snacking on some Old Dutch Ketchup flavoured chips, I wonder if this was really necessary...
A Canadian gay rights organization is applauding the decision that deemed Dire Straits' 1980s hit "Money for Nothing" unacceptable for Canadian radio.
The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council decided this week that the song violates part of the broadcast industry's code of ethics.
The council said a homosexual slur in the song's lyrics is discriminatory.
Egale Canada executive director Helen Kennedy says it's the right decision, given the recent high-profile suicides of teenagers who were the subject of homophobic and transphobic bullying.
Kennedy says it's time to take such hateful words out of popular culture.
The decision was made after a listener of a radio station in St. John's, N.L., complained about the song last year.
The panel noted that "Money for Nothing" would be acceptable for broadcast if suitably edited.

A few of the request radio stations play it with that verse edited out of the song; the local classic rock station plays the original version.
Does Canada lack the technology to edit this song?

Geez a 25 year old song that's clearly satire.
They should hear Les Boys by Dire Straits.
Les boys do cabaret
Les boys are glad to be gay
They're not afraid now
Disco bar in germany
Les boys are glad to be
Upon parade now
Les boys got leather straps
Les boys got ss caps
But they got no gun now
Get dressed up get a little risque
Got to do a little s & m these days
It's all in fun now
Les boys come on again
For the high class whores
And the businessmen
Who drive in their mercedes benz
To a disco bar in old munchen
They get the jokes that the d.j. makes
They get nervous and they make mistakes
They're bad for business
Some tourist take a photograph
Les boys don't get one laugh
He says they're useless
Late at night when they're gone away
Les boys dream of jean genet
High heel shoes and a black beret
And the posters on the wall that say
Les boys do cabaret
Les boys are glad to be gay

There's also a slur against a prominent cellist, but I don't hear anybody complaining about that.

They just need to do the audio drop out edit that's done in the States. Luckily for you Canadians the song won't be edited to "that little Canuck."

Perhaps they should have a bonfire to burn all copies of the single, toss in the Mark Twain books while they are at it.

Who the hell listens that closely to lyrics on the radio anyway?
Hell where I live Clawfinger's '********' is still allowed on the radio.

What a joke. The slur is question is uttered by a working-class dolt, in the song. It's point-of-view, and it's making fun of that mentality, in essence. People are freaking retarded. (Yes, that's intentional.)

I heard the censored version on Sirius a few weeks back. Isn't the whole point of satellite radio the fact that it's above the FCC??? Howard Stern is ok but not Dire Straits??? Makes no sense.
