The Geto Boys Discussion Thread

This was one of my favorite rap groups back in the days. I just saw that Willie D was recently sentenced to a year in prison for wire fraud. Also, sometime in the past year or two Bushwick Bill has become a Christian rapper.

Very underrated when it comes to getting props but definitely trendsetters along with Public Enemy(conscious, political), NWA(Gangsta), DeLa/A Tribe Called Quest(hippy, jazz infusion).

Someone deleted my post of the gangster of love video....to be expected...my fault. That's my favorite song from them.

I was pissed off when I bought the self-titled album. "Gangster of love" wasn't the Steve Miller version!

"Six feet deep" was probably the greatest "Dead Homies" song of the 90's (And there was a lot of them)

Ugh, the Sweet Home Alabama version? I heard somewhere they didn't license the sample and Steve Miller sued them over it, so all re-releases and compilations got the new version. Which is strange, because I would have thought "Sweet Home Alabama" would cost more to license than "The Joker", but who knows.

Notable that they were so shocking with their lyrics, that Rick Rubin put a disclaimer on the self-titled album saying he, nor the company endorsed the lyrical content.

Everything from Grip It to The Resurrection is amazing.

Their last album sounds like three old men rapping while sitting on rocking chairs on their front porches.

"Six feet deep" was probably the greatest "Dead Homies" song of the 90's (And there was a lot of them)
I'd give that to "Dead Homiez", by Ice Cube. Six Feet Deep was sentimental. Dead Homiez actually gave you the "by this point I can't feel anything anymore" vibe.

Ha yeah, I'm guessing that happened to a lot of people....listening to it brought back some memories...mainly of raw they were.

RIP Bushwick Bill

I remember I got a autographed photo in the mail and it looked like he signed it and it was not a copy.

A publicist for rapper Bushwick Bill says the founder of the iconic Houston rap group the Geto Boys has died.

Bill's publicist, Dawn P., told The Associated Press that the rapper died Sunday at 9:35 p.m., local time, at a Colorado hospital. The publicist says the rapper, whose legal name is Richard Shaw, was surrounded by family when he died.

His Dallas-based business manager, Pete Marrero, said the 52-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in February. He had been planning to go on tour around the time he was hospitalized.

RIP Bushwick! Tough to see those we grew up listening pass away far too soon.
