Goes back more to the sound of their earlier work. Which, while not a bad thing, had me a bit bummed at first, as I really liked their last - "Bring On The Comets" quite a bit. I was hoping they'd continue more in that direction, but alas, still a decent effort.

Just the two CD Deluxe. Not the exorbitantly priced Director's Cut.

EDIT: This album is great, by the way. Donald Glover is a pretty talented individual. While there are jokes here and there, the overall tone of the album is pretty serious and very autobiographical and Glover definitely pulls it off. You can tell he's influenced by a wide range of artists and genres. His style is pretty aggressive and you can feel the passion he has for what he's saying.

I picked this up last week and have been listening to it for the past few days. I've got to agree with you...this is a great cd. It was pretty much a blind buy for me and I'm really pleasantly surprised with it.

Mostly live, acoustic covers with Jon Brion, but good ones.

And on a similar theme...

Both of which, I might add, are more redeeming than their last studio efforts.

That looks interesting. Miller and Brion would be a great combination!

They've done a lot of work together on Rhett's previous solo releases - be it production, songwriting or performing on them - so not too surprising. But if you're interested in what exactly he does here, from the liner notes....

....During the live recording at Largo, Jon Brion played piano and sang on "California Stars", "Queen Bitch", "The Belway Brothers", "I'll Cry Instead" and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go". He also played drums, electric guitar, lent vocals and produced the bonus track "Cynthia Mask".

Forgot to mention there is also an additional studio bonus track of "Wave Of Mutilation" that features The Pixies Joey Santiago, himself. (In addition to a live version that appears on the regular portion of the disc, which does not).

Thanks for that info, Rocketdog! I do understand that it is not uncommon for Jon Brion to be working with Rhett Miller. In fact, I find Brion’s name in the credits of virtually every alternative artist I enjoy - Aimee Mann, Elliott Smith, Jason Falkner, etc. I only meant that it is not as common to see him as “out front” as he appears on this album. Again, thank you. I will be tracking this one down soon.

Re: What's the latest CD you bought? [2011]

Kelly Clarkson - Stronger
Disturbed - Indestructible
Motley Crue - Greatest Hits

The last two weren't purchases, but they were found at work. I gave the original owner a few days to claim them, but no one turned up. Figured I'd grab them before they wound up in the trash. The Disturbed cd is in pretty rough shape but the Crue is flawless.
