Journey "Separate Ways" Video Awfulness Appreciation Thread

Revisited this fine piece of unintentional comedy a day ago and it got me thinking. Is this one of the best songs attached to a truly horrid music video? Either way, it never fails to make me laugh, from the odd premise, to Steve Smith's FOOSBALL shirt.

My favorite moment remains at 2:45

This is a prime example of why I never really liked music videos. I can't even hear this song on the radio without seeing this godawful video playing in my head. I especially hate hearing it when I'm around other people because I have to explain to them why I'm laughing.

When they used it TRON: LEGACY and it just kept playing, my friend leaned over and said, "If there's a foosball table in this arcade, I'm going to lose it."

Such an awful video for such an awesome song. Luckily I can separate the two. But if I remember correctly, my 10 year-old self and all my other friends thought this was an awesome video at the time. Almost all videos at the time were pretty awful when you think about it. And I miss them terribly.

And I loved the moment it cranked up in the recent Tron movie. The sound of that song and the arcade noise in the background brought back a flood of good memories.

If by "horrid" you mean "incredibly awesome", then I agree.

Steve Smith drumming on barrels of toxic waste? Neal Schon playing guitar on a forklift? Jonathan Cain banging on a keyboard that's glued to the side of an industrial warehouse? And we've also got a hot chick randomly walking around in a tight leather skirt.

Great art.

What, you guys never went to an impromptu Journey concert down by the docks? Oh man, those things were awesome! The band would jump around, half the time they wouldn't even be playing their instruments, but the music kept going! We never knew how they did it. Things would usually wind down around the time Steve Perry crapped his own pants from singing too hard. We were young but even then we knew there's only so much fun you have when your underwear was full of performance-induced diarrhea.

Good times.

At least the Journey video wasn't a career-ender like this one.

Air keyboards at 0:54 remain the greatest moment in music video history. Fuck the Rosicrucian dogs who bark otherwise.

Yep.

Though I always preferred this song and video, both of which seem to have been forgotten:

That one reminds me of the No More Lies video from Schon and Hammer:

As much as I enjoy some of Journey's music, their videos were of that cheesy side of the decade, with the long-form of Oh Sherrie being the worst.

Re: Journey "Separate Ways" Video Awfulness Appreciation Thread

"Separate Ways" was a "theme" song of mine over a girl I was hurting over at the time back in 83-84 when it came out. Love it. I don't even mind the video!

I really love Journey anyway - altho only with Steve Perry - and the older stuff with Gregg Rolie.

I've never liked Johnathan Caine (keyboardist), especially after seeing him in the (director's cut) version of VH1 Behind the Music. Ugh, what a wimp.

So true. I thought that back in the day and time has only made the visual worse. A great song, however.

It might not be great art, but the eighties were definitely great times. Far better than today in nearly every way, and especially in the realm of popular music and music videos. Unsurpassed, and quite possibly unsurpassable.

Disregard my above comment when looking at this flopper. What a limp video and song. The song may have eventually been deemed passable, had it not been tied this crapfest video.

I remembered the song and the video immediately; then again, I've recently been on a Neal Schon kick, learning riffs/licks, and practicing his solos. He's actually quite underrated, IMNSHO.

Hard rock & metal guitarists everywhere could tear a page or two from Neals' book, and they'd be better off for it.

Tone + speed + taste + melody + exquisite gear = Neal Schon.

I wouldn't call Neil Schon underrated. He's beyond well respected in the industry and amongst musicians. After all, the dude was touring with Santana when he was 16. At 16 I was mimicking Whitesnake on my silverburst Les Paul copy (badly) and wanting to be the next Warren fucking Demartini. With maybe 2.4% of the talent.

I agree with the rest of the sentiment though. Schon is a master (although something of a massive prick, according to a drummer friend who recorded with him). I respect his talent. Even something like "Separate Ways", where the main riff is a simple E5 with that harmonic lick between bars, shows he knows when to keep it basic and grounded and still have it sound tasty.

I'll take a single Neil Schon over three dozen Yngwies any day of the week.

Agreed 100%.

Time for a gratuitous pic (and a pick, if you look closely!):

Oh dear, this horrible thing had mercifully disappeared from my mind until this thread.

He should have just gone with the medieval storyline they started out with.

^Are you planning on drilling some mounting holes, or will you be using something like velcro to get the keyboard to stay on the wall?

It seems like this (along with the keyboard-guitar thing) was another one of those pathetic attempts by keyboard players in the 80's to try to look as cool as guitar players. Ain't gonna happen.

I'll have to go with the velcro. I think I'd have some explaining to do when I move out of this apt otherwise.

The language is nsfw...but this sums up 80's metal/rock videos pretty well
