Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
In the rock category, the Grammy seem to be elitist snobs, I don't think have heard any of that music on the radio.

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I never usually pay attention to the Grammys or take much stock in who wins or is nominated but I am majorly rooting for Esperanza Spalding.
Even if someone with quite a few albums already isn't really a "new artist" getting nominated and pulling off some kind of upset would be deserved exposure for a great artist. |

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I won't speak for "NOW" because I think they're crap, but the Grammy compilations are pretty cool. Have introduced me to several acts I hadn't heard of before and are fun to listen to a few years down the road as music you never hear or listen to any more. It's a shame that they didn't include the Best New Artist nominees this year (I think they always have in the past), as that's always an interesting listen. They did a better job than usual of representing the other big nominees, with all the Best Album and Best Song and all the Best Record Nominees except "Empire State of Mind" appearing. Nice to get versions of "Love the Way You Lie" and "Fuck You" that I can actually listen to with kids in my car!
I ordered it from Amazon. Good deal, made better because they sent a $1 MP3 credit after I ordered. BTW : Who knew that Sade was a duo or group? For 25 years, I've always thought she was a female vocalist! |
Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
What the hell? How is it possible to nominate 2 things that were released in March and June 2009 respectively, for a Grammy in 2010???
I mean, people are still caning Skream's remix these days, but really??? -----> Best Dance Recording "In For The Kill" -- La Roux Best Electronic/Dance Album "La Roux" -- La Roux |

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I know next to nothing about the Grammys or new music but do you guys think Drake will win? I'm think of betting on him because he's got good odds.

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
If you put a gun to my head, I'd go with Drake. He's been the most successful besides Justin Bieber, who won't win because they never give it to teen idols. The problem is that this can be a very unpredictable category with recent winners like Adele and the Zac Brown Band. Many awards have become harder and harder to predict. I blame the even-enlarging Country wing that seems to pump up their own branch or folkies instead of more deserving Rock, Hip-Hop or God-forbid Rap artists.
Here's a list of every Rap artist who has ever won the Best New Artist Grammy: 1993 - Arrested Development So that's something to consider. |

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
Well I got the Grammy Nominee album. I like most of it (Glee cast aside). I'm not sure I have a favorite, but I sure have a least favorite track : The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert. That this song got nominated for Best Song really shows how the Country branch has taken over the Academy and tilted it for the worse. This song indulges in every terrible country cliche there is. They even site the dead dog buried in the back yard. Really.
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/DQYNM6SjD_o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> How this song could ever be considered one of the five best original song composition in a 13 month time span is astonishing. Was it actually a country hit? Three of the five songs in contention are country tracks, actually. The other two aren't bad, but man that one is awful. To any Academy members who would ever consider voting for this song, I have two words of advice : "Fuck You". |

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I'm surprised The Black Keys beat out Arcade Fire for Best Alternative Album. As much as I like Brothers, I definitely think The Suburbs was the better of the two.
--- "The song otherwise known as Forget You" --- I figured Ray LaMontagne wouldn't win Song of the Year, but it's nice that he's finally been nominated for one of the major Grammys. --- I'm sorry, but Esperanza Spalding winning is ridiculous. She has been active for the past 10 years, releasing solo material and albums with other artists. That can hardly qualify as being a new artist. And I know the qualification is the first recording that brings the artist to the public's attention, but I don't recall anyone really talking about her or her most recent album until she was nominated. Definitely a victory for jazz music and the non-mainstream, but it still feels sort of unfair to actual new artists. |
Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I'm actually enjoying the performances this year... weird. *ducks*

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
I love her music but can someone please answer a stupid question for me?
How is Esperanza Spalding in the "Best New Artist" category when she's had 3 albums released since 2006?

I remember her Self-Titled release getting a lot of good press/praise since it's release in 2008. Odd fact, when she was at Berklee she was one of my friends' Jazz Bass teacher. |
Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
So if Lady Antebellum wins album of the year that would give them the second most wins in a single night, tied with three others.
|
Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
So does anyone care to explain how Arcade Fire can lose Best Alternative Album but win Album of the Year? That doesn't make any sense at all.
And while technically I think The Suburbs was a better album than Recovery, I think Eminem really deserved the win. I'm shocked that he has to settle for Best Rap Album, yet again. I am happy for Arcade Fire though; The Suburbs was an incredible album from start to finish. Recovery was great as well, so it was a tough call between the two. I can see why The Suburbs won over Recovery, but I can't help but think the Academy has it out for Eminem; relegating him to Best Rap Album and never letting him win Album of the Year. Feel bad for Eminem losing, yet again. |
Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
Wow Arcade Fire, just wow. The little band that could.

Very happy to see AF win Album of the Year. Well deserved.
Black Keys should've taken Perry's spot in that category as well. |

The best performance was the dancer that broke his ass during the Usher/Bieber performance. ;)

So Lady Antebellum wins big for her blatant ripoff of Alan Parsons.

Re: 2010 Grammy Nominees Announced
Favorite performance tonight so far has been the Bruno Mars/Janelle Monae/B.O.B team up. Great stuff.
Also isn't Fame Monster an EP? Nominated in an album category? Even though a good majority of the songs were better than most Pop that came out that year, I find it odd. |

If you go back and watch the Cee Lo performance, several of the muppets are flipping the bird (the pug by the piano and the left most backup singer).

Furious Bieber fans attack Spalding's online profile after Grammy upset
Feb. 14, 2011, 10:34 AM EST WENN Angry Justin Bieber fans attacked an online biography about Esperanza Spalding on Sunday after the jazz performer beat the "Baby" hitmaker to the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The little-known bassist and singer was the surprise winner of the accolade, besting competitors Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons for the title at the Los Angeles ceremony. Bing: Grammy new artist award controversy The Grammy upset sparked outrage among the teenage pop sensation's devotees, prompting them to seek revenge on Spalding's Wikipedia.com profile by posting nasty messages on the page, which is edited by members of the public. After an introductory note about Spalding's big win, one furious fan wrote: "JUSTIN BIEBER DESERVED IT GO DIE IN A HOLE. WHO THE HECK ARE YOU ANYWAY?" More: Bieber 'upset' by Grammy snub Elsewhere on the page, the singer's middle name was changed to both "Justin" and "Quesadilla," and her Grammy win was written up with the addendum, "Even though no one has ever heard of her! Yay!," according to MTV.com. At the end of her biography, one user wrote, "Biber 4 Lyfe." The rude additions were promptly removed by Wikipedia officials, but not before news of the website vandalism had spread across the Internet. More: Spalding makes history with best new artist win After got getting the award, Bieber expressed disappointment, telling MTV News on Sunday night, "I'm not going to lie — I was disappointed. But, you know, I'm gonna come back [next year] and we'll take a few home." Also: More on the 2011 Grammys Backstage at the awards, Spalding and Bieber did run into each other and the two shook hands, and Bieber congratulated her. |
