R.E.M.: Collapse Into Now - March 2011 (Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, Peaches guest)

Tracklisting:

1. "Discoverer"
2. "All the Best"
3. "Uberlin"
4. "Oh My Heart"
5. "It Happened Today" (featuring Eddie Vedder)
6. "Every Day Is Yours to Win"
7. "Mine Smell Like Honey"
8. "Walk It Back"
9. "Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter" (featuring Peaches and Lenny Kaye)
10. "That Someone Is You"
11. "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I"
12. "Blue" (featuring Patti Smith)

from pitchfork:

Alt-rock godfathers R.E.M. have finished recording their latest album, titled Collapse Into Now and due in March from Warner Bros. According to Spin, the new LP will feature guest appearances from Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder, and-- of all people-- electro sex rapper Peaches.

The band recorded the LP in Berlin, New Orleans, and Nashville with producer Jacknife Lee, who also produced the last R.E.M. album, Accelerate. Smith sings on the album-closing track "Blue", while Vedder chips in on a song called "It Happened Today". The as-yet-untitled Peaches collab also features guest work from Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye.

Talking to Spin, band member Mike Mills says, "We wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice, mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers." He also describes the album as a "very personal, very human record-- not only to Michael [Stipe], but personal and human in the sense of the narrative of the songs, the protagonists of the songs."

My hopes are high after the very goodness that was Accelerate.

Interesting.

I went to add it to Amazon as a reminder, but this is all that shows up when I search for Collapse Into Now:

We'll see. I've been hearing "This will be their best album since Automatic for the People" for the last 15 years.

Here's Mike Mills talking to Spin about the new album (http://www.spin.com/articles/rem-tap...ith-next-album), and here's a link to him talking about it to RS (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/51942/231022).

I enjoyed Accelerate, and I'm looking forward to this new one, also.

Not knowing much about music production, is there a specific reason why bands go to studios all over the world to make their albums? Is it because of the equipment / space / engineers at that location are well-regarded, or is it just that they happen to be there at the time they're feeling creative?

While I haven't gone crazy for an REM album in years, I always look forward to new stuff.

You usually hear about artists trying to change things up by going to different locales. Sometimes when they feel their sound is getting stale. Like Low and Heroes are always referred to as Bowie's Berlin albums and Station to Station is his LA album.

one of my favorite bands from Chronic Town through AFTP .... then it was all downhill
I have no reason to believe this will be any different

No kidding. NAIHF is a really good album. I didn't like it on first listen, but after going back to it more than a few times, it's really, really good.

New Adventures In Hi Fi is, imo, the last truly great REM album.

The sad thing is, even if it's any good they'll probably ruin it in the mastering process like they did with Accelerate. The songs were pretty good, but that's one of the shittiest sounding records I've ever heard. I even tried the vinyl version but apparently it was the same master.

Not high hopes for this one.

Yep. No coincedence that was Bill Berry's last album with the band. Accelerate was a pretty good album but just an echo of what REM used to be.

Sad, but true. Although I've enjoyed parts of "Up' and the majority of 'Accelerate'.

I like Up but it was a clear step down from their work up to that point.

I actually liked about 1/3 of the songs on Reveal quite a lot. If you could pick out the best from Up, Reveal and maybe one or two from Around The Sun you'd have a decent album.

I enjoyed their last album because it rocked more and seemed less pondered over. Looks like they are going the opposite direction on the new one and it gives me less hope.

I keep waiting to hear a track or something from this, and then I remember it's still almost 4 months away...

I'm glad Peaches is guest-performing on this one. I always go to R.E.M. when I'm in the mood for some rap.

Nothing they have done since has come close to Radio Song.
