Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?

Re: Where should Green Day be ranked amongst all-time great bands?
Where do they rank? No where. Why should they? They made 2 decent albums, then made some generic shit, then came back on the hate Bush bandwagon (following in the footsteps of the Dixie Chicks to give you an idea of how relevent this movement was at this point) and rode some success. I'll give them credit for making a few good songs, but the amount of overhype on this band is beyond the likes of U2 or Aerosmith because they both at least had one classic record.
And yes, nothing you have listed hadn't been done before. We're not even talking obscure bands as allready pointed out by videos above. This thread is like me asking where Slipknot ranks all time just because i like their first two albums.

Green Day has defended your "what's punk about a ballad" argument in interviews related to that song. The fact that was the last song people expected from them is what made it punk. For them to be able to make any kind of music they want, to them, was as punk as they could be at that point. Just because it doesn't sound like what you associate with a punk song, doesn't mean it's not punk in spirit. Same argument can be made to the punk rock opera.
I'd say by American Idiot they were pretty firmly straight up rock (making that album a rock opera and not a punk rock opera), but the point here is that your arguments about their creative breakthroughs are on thin ice. It's great that you enjoy them so much, but please stop trying to credit them with things they didn't do. They didn't do anything that hasn't been done before. And there's nothing wrong with that.

But "The Time of Your Life"? That's pure corporate rock.

Sorry, but no band that I've seen play in a college dorm to 10 people should ever make any all-time best list.

Visiting a friend at SFSU, circa '91, Green Day was playing at a little party in a room across the hall. I actually thought they were pretty good at the time, that is, for a band playing in a college dorm...
Key word being "I", as in not "you" or someone else.

This has got to be the biggest pile-on since a guy calling himself something like Rambo Balboa argued that Stallone's movies were still getting better and better.

Except that song is terrible and American Idiot is actually good. I don't hear much similarity between the two songs either, but if hating on The Day helps you sleep at night, go ahead lol.

I'm not claiming GD is the most groundbreaking band or anything, but they do have their own sound and they have consistently put out the best music of any band of the past 25 years. Just my opinion of course.

They have their own sound? Go revisit the period from, oh, 1977 to 1983. Green Day have to be one of the most derivative bands ever - not that there's anything wrong with the genre.
