Man commits suicide at Swell Season concert in California

http://www.avclub.com/articles/man-c...-in-cal,44372/
In some of the most disturbing news we've heard in a while, SF Weekly is reporting that a man committed suicide last night at a Swell Season concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California.

Several witnesses say that the man climbed up onto the roof, then sprinted and stumbled to the top before jumping off. He fell approximately three stories, through lighting rigging, then landed on a speaker on the stage less than three feet from Swell Season vocalist/songwriter Glen Hansard.

It's not clear if the man, who was described as in his mid- to late 20s, died on the scene or a short time later. The San Jose Mercury News says local officials confirmed the incident, but wouldn't disclose details.
Dang. Definitely was trying to make someone feel bad, I suppose...?

Reports that the man was falling slowly are unconfirmed at this time.

I know everyone likes to make with the funny but seriously, what a fucked-up thing to do. Everyone at that concert had to deal with seeng this guy's suicide and now Glen Hansard has to live with someone literally dying right in front of him at a show -- that's got to mess you up.

A good band would have jumped right into the song "It's Rainin' Men".

Saw them here in Ontario in July. They were amazing except booked on the same evening and time as RUSH so most of their show was drowned out. Hansard was pretty pissed about it, had his sound-guy crank the amps and busted out into a heated Astral Weeks, shouting the tune at the top of his lungs in an effort to be heard.

Man, been a tough summer for the Swell Season.

That's pretty bizarre. I feel bad for the people in attendance that had to witness it and for Hansard & Irglova and the rest of their band for that to happen during one of their shows. I understand the guy must have been going through some things, but I think it's selfish to do it the way he did, forever affecting these people's lives. If he really fell as close to Hansard as is being reported, it's very lucky he didn't actually hit Hansard on the way down.

In (sadly) similar news, a frontman for an up-and-coming British group climbed up on a satellite mast and killed himself at a Belgian music festival yesterday.

I watched up to 3:30 and then ended up watching the whole documentary. Thanks for sharing.

I read he did it right after the song "When Your Mind's Made Up." Seriously.

I saw them at Ravinia here last month. Glen invited all the non-pavillion ticket holders to come down into the aisles. needless to say, the stuffed short staff at Ravinia were not amused and had the police help clear the aisles after a few songs.

How far into the concert were they? Just wondering if the concertgoers are going to get a refund.

As far as The Bridge goes (a short clip of which is in Post #11), great documentary. Haunting.

And from an updated article:

According to The Mercury News, Michael Edward Pickels of San Jose was out on $150,000 bail and due in court October 5th facing charges of assault with a firearm, domestic violence and false imprisonment...

Glen might have thought "You must have Fallen From The Sky".. You know, "When Your Minds Made Up" it's "Falling Slowly" "All The Way Down"...
