Liz Phair raps on new album "Freestyle"

It seems Liz Phair has put out a new (Internet only?) album. I listened to the sample track, "Bollywood" on her website. I'm not sure if she is joking or not...she actually sounds like a low rent Ke$ha if that's possible. I'm afraid to buy the album...guess I'll have to read some of the reviews online.

When Liz Phair raps, we all lose.

Frankly, I don't think she's ever lived up to the promise of Exile In Guyville.

It just hasn't been the same since WCSE. Those first three albums, plus her early demos were fantastic.

I couldn't make it more than 15 seconds into the song before I had to stop it.

Re: Liz Phair raps on new album "Freestyle"

Yeah, I could only make it a few seconds into 'Bollywood' before I shut it off.

Here's another track from the album 'Bang Bang'.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gTN3Xbgb8xo&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gTN3Xbgb8xo&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This one's certainly better, but I'm still not sold on it...and this is coming from someone who really liked her self titled album.

It'd be better if she did it in the style of Nina Gordon's Straight Out of Compton cover:

I always thought Alanis Morisette stole the idea for "My Humps" from Nina.

To quote the Simpsons:

Bart: Stop that right now.
Lisa: Promise you'll never do that again.

Re: Liz Phair raps on new album "Freestyle"

This song makes me sad. After some of the songs on her last two albums I thought she had reached the bottom. She should take a few years off and come back with an acoustic album.

That first "song" actually made me ill. I felt a strong urge to hurl.

Well, I was poking around a bit on Youtube and I found a couple more tracks from the album.

This is pretty much the only one I like at this point:

I'm a huge pain of Exile, but seriously....she needs to stop making music if this is her best. Its just horrible.

Yeah, this was the only halfway decent song so far. That "Bollywood" track is just a monumental piece of shit. For ANY artist. Shame on you Liz. And this is coming from someone who even liked her last two albums!

Re: Liz Phair raps on new album "Freestyle"

OK. I gave Liz my six bucks today for Funstyle and have given the whole thing a listen. Overall, I'm liking it. There are 4 tracks that are basically Liz blowing off steam creatively in the studio- they work more like skits than actual songs. I can take them or leave them, but ultimately I think I'm glad they're there. The remaining 2/3rds of the album is very good on first listen. It's Liz doing what she does best, and you can tell she's having fun. The album works as an internet only release for fans, but ultimately the album seems to be for Liz Phair alone, and she doesn't seem to care what we all think.

Unless it sounds something like Exile in Guyville, it's not Liz doing what she does best.

Not near as entertaining as Ween's cover of Gin & Juice. And her using the N word, even if she is just repeating the lyrics, is a little off putting.

Yeah, but everyone knows Ben Folds's cover of Bitches ain't Shit is the best cover in this style.

Thanks for letting me know as I considered that the only Ween song I had ever heard. I guess i'm still 100% Ween free.
