Devo: VIP or "regular" tix? Decisions, decisions....
Tickets go on sale today for Devo in Chicago Aug 5 at the Congress, and I'm wrestling on whether to get a pair of regular tickets ($35 each) or spend $100 each for the "VIP" experience, which promises a "meet and greet with Devo, express entry, private balcony wing area".
My cynical side tells me the extra $65 could end up being nothing but a pricey waste. Anyone ever go with a VIP package, and was it worth it?

I may just let my memories of having seen them a few times back in the early '80s suffice. I'm not a fan of the Congress theater in any way, shape or form - and the more I think about it the less I want to go.

It might play better in concert. I've made it a point to pick up all of Devo's concert DVDs, and even though the most recent of those shows is 7 years old at this point...man. They sounded fantastic. (A lot of that's owed to David Kendrick on the drums, though, and I'm sure Josh Freese is going to be behind the kit on these shows. Those shows were more guitar-driven, though, and since that's really not the emphasis with the stuff they just put out...)
I do like their new album a lot (especially "Fresh"!), and I'm very tempted to see them in Atlanta next month. Doesn't look like I get the choice of VIP tickets there, though.

I saw DEVO at The Vic last year, they were great. See if you can download their show from the Winter Olympics. They did a huge set with many of the new songs. They can still rock it. Very impressive for a bunch of 60 year-olds.

A band that hasn't done anything significant since I was in high school should not be performing anymore. I graduated in 1979.

Example: Tonight - at a nearby outdoor arena - is a triple bill of Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special and Brett Michael. In my opinion those artists are well past their prime and haven't necessarily contributed anything of musical substance in some time.
Yet I still think they should perform on tour for as long as people want to go see them. Me? I have no desire to hear Free Bird ever again, and since I graduated high school in 78 I've had my fill of it - unless it's at the end of a Rob Zombie movie. But I know people that are going to the Skynyrd show, and they are actually looking forward to it. Boggles my mind, but as long as I'm not going, who cares?
I dig Devo. Based on your threadcrap, apparently you don't. To each his/her own, baby...

So you would agree KISS looks pretty dumb in their clown makeup as old men?

DEVO'S new cd is so good. I was amazed at how good it is. Most bands who release stuff this late in life usally sucks. Everyone should at least take a listen to the new cd.

I saw them on the New Traditionalists tour and while the sounded great, they only played live for around 1 hour. I remember being really disapointed over the length. (That's what she said)
However I would spring for the VIP tickets now. I find I usually complain about NOT spending the money for something over, wishing I had spent less.

also after thinking about it. it might not have been the performance that was bad. i think it was mostly the q&a after wards. old men trying to keep the devo shtick is kinda strange to see.

Okay, the comments from you guys in this thread inspired me to pick up the new CD---and I must say it kicks ass! Not a bad song on it from beginning to end. Great balance of sounding like vintage Devo, but still sounding up-to-date.

Caught the DEVO gig in Houston tonight and it was one of the better shows I have seen over the last few years.

The first time I saw them was on SNL and was like...who the heck are these guys? I couldn't remember their name and just tell someone, "it's the guys with the red flower pots on their heads". Glad to see they're out and along with the Cars new album. The late 70's and early 80's were a blast and still kickn'.

$100 for meet and greet sounds a like a decent deal. I think Katy Perry is offering VIP meet & greets for $500 for her concerts and those tickets have all sold out. But I imagine that most of her meet & greets are from middle aged old men wanting a photo with her.
