PuNk music with a "novelty flair?"

Can anyone name songs or groups that this? The Ramones are the only ones who really come to mind for me (not so much as NOVELTY, but I include Ramones for their distinct BUBBLE-GUM sound), and while I'm sure there are more, I feel I am missing out on something great to listen to - something with a fun, catchy beat, but legitimately "punk."

And while I know that Punk Rock Girl by The Dead Milkmen are not punk, even something in that realm wouldn't be wrong to include here.

The Queers, Mr T. Experience, etc. Hell, just check out the Lookout! Records catalog and you'll find loads of pop-punk bands. Also recommend one of the funnest live bands you'll see The Real McKenzies. Riffs on traditional song (Auld Lang Syne, Romin' in the Gloamin, etc.), bagpipes and good times all around.

Black 47 usually has a couple jokey songs per album.

By that, I mean they have a distinct "bubble-gum" sound to their tunes. (I meant to use 'bubble-gum,' not so much 'novelty,' but the gist is there. We know.)

Ah, gotcha. In that case, I'd recommend The Descendents and ALL.

Re: PuNk music with a "novelty flair?"

The Queers, Screeching Weasel, Mr T Experience, The Parasites...

The Descendents are must. Particularly the "All" album and "Enjoy!". "Liveage" would be a good place to start though.

Chixdiggit! are another must. Especially their first album.

The Muffs.

For "novelty", check out Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies.

The whole Punk Chartbusters series features punk bands doing mostly pop covers. I think there's about 7 or 8 disks full of stuff in those comps.

yeah, just checkout the whole Lookout Records catalog.

Re: PuNk music with a "novelty flair?"

Not sure how the Ramones have any sort of "novelty flair" so I guess I'm unclear what you're looking for. Bands that popped into my head before reading the thread were along the lines of Gogol Bordello (Gypsy punk), The Tossers, Flogging Molly (both Celtic punk)...stuff like that. Bands that incorporate totally unrelated styles and instruments into punk music.

Now that I've read a few other posts though, I'd say Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is more along the lines of what the OP is actually looking for.

The Rezillos and Toy Dolls come to mind. The Toy Dolls are one of my very favorite bands.

Re: PuNk music with a "novelty flair?"

I think Go Betty Go and Tsunami Bomb both fit "a fun, catchy beat, but legitimately "punk", though they're not 'novelty'.
Murphy's Law, maybe, although maybe not "punk".
Butthole Surfers.
Elvis Hitler [maybe less punk than hardcore or whatever]
The Donnas
Infectious Grooves
the Dick Nixons
Surf Punks

Some of those blur the line between punk, metal and rockabilly.
Not sure if this is totally what you're looking for, but here's the thread when I asked a similar [I think] question a while back] http://forum.dvdtalk.com/music-talk/...umor-rock.html

And a recent discovery of mine [I always get in too late], I'm not sure if they're punk, I don't know if they're novelty, but they're definitely different: the Tiger Lillies.

I first heard the Toy Dolls back in '83 on Sacramento's short-lived "Rock of the 80s" station and couldn't believe it later when I found out they were considered punk. Whatever they are, they're hella funny (stop saying 'hella', Cartman!)

Stranger still is that the Toy Dolls first became popular as a part of the Oi! subgenre, which contains a ton of bands that sound NOTHING like the Toy Dolls.

In the mid 90s I was in a punk rock band here in Boston and our scene was very "Oi!" and "Street punk" influenced (even though my band was more akin to early 80s hardcore, 80s west coast stuff) so people tended to go nuts when any bands from the 70s/80s "oi!" era came over to Boston to play and usually we got put on the bill for some reason.

Point being, we got to play some shows with the Toy Dolls and it was great, really nice guys, put on an awesome show. But it was really odd seeing the crowd of skinheads going nuts for a jokey, poppy weirdo band.
