RIP Ronnie James Dio

this was on the xm/sirius fb page, and his official page posted it but its down now

Just got some info from trusted sources that Ronnie James Dio passed away tonight. RIP. Another legend gone - Mario.
:rip:

well i guess we can close this for now

After a flood of rumors started spreading via the Internet late Saturday that Dio had lost cancer fight, BLABBERMOUTH.NET reached out to Ronnie's wife/manager Wendy Dio, who sent back the following message at approximately 2:35 a.m. EST on Sunday, May 16:

"I am at the hospital and Ronnie has NOT passed away!!!! He is not doing
good, but he is not dead.

"I will let you know if anything changes.

"Thank you for your concern."

Damn, I didn't realize he even had cancer. Hope he pulls through. Metal wouldn't be the same without him.

Really glad I saw him with Heaven & Hell 18 months ago.

Even if he isn't dead, I really wish I had seen him with Heaven & Hell when I had the chance.

Late 60s and going through chemo is a tough battle. If anyone can kick it, it is RJD. The guy is a living legend, the voice of too many classic albums from Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell.

I was hoping to catch H&H but they never came to my area. :( The last time they did was in 2007 and I decided not to go. How foolish of me. Strike when the iron's hot.

Not good. I grew up listening to Dio. Hell, I've been listening to him to almost continuously since then!
I wish him all the best.

Ronnie's got one hell of a tough fight on his hands, one that most people don't survive. Some do, most don't.

I've been a fan of Ronnie's ever since Mob Rules first came out. His voice and the title track to that album immediately clicked with me. He is my all time favorite singer, and I've had the good fortune to see him live a few times (4 times with DIO, and once with Heaven and Hell). He's a great live performer on top of being a great singer and songwriter.

If he doesn't make it he will be greatly missed. It would be a huge loss.

I'm hoping that he beats the odds.

Somewhere out in the afterlife, Dio and Frank Frazetta are getting together to plan some orchestral metal masterpiece.

I just saw the episode of That Metal Show he was on last week. Truly one of metal's greatest singers. I loved his work in Rainbow.

re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

I'm pretty bummed out today after reading the official news. It's gonna be pretty hard and emotional watching the "Revolver Golden Gods Awards" show this Saturday night (May 22) on VH1 Classic. The event was taped in early April and it will be the final time we get to see Dio alive. There is an exclusive clip of Dio being interviewed by the hosts of "That Metal Show" on the VH1 Classic website, as well as Eddie Trunk's website. Dio appeared to be in good spirits and optimistic about an upcoming tour (which unfortunately was cancelled not long after that interview).

All of this is so overwhelming. It is a sad day for all of us who admired Dio over the years. I always imagined the greatest voice in Metal would continue rocking until he reached 80. Dio may have lost his mortality, but his spirit and music will continue FOREVER. Long live the 'Man on the Silver Mountain'.

re: RIP Ronnie James Dio

I've been trying to find the words to express my sadness, but nothing seems adequate. This feels less like the death of an individual, and more like the death of Heavy Metal itself. RJD was the very embodiment of the genre. No one was more Metal than Dio. The king is dead...LONG LIVE ROCK 'n' ROLL! \m/ \m/

A sad sad day. :(

I'm glad I got to see him live. It was a true honor to see a man who could sing and put on a stage performance that was 100x better than "performers" half his age.

From Ronnie's Official Facebook page:

Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May.
Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes
before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he
was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have
all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this
terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever. Wendy

I have not been this choked up on a celebrity death since Bo Schembechler died. John Ritter a close second. I grew up with all 3 of them.

I'm just glad I got to see Dio open for Maiden twice.

Dammit! I've been working on the yard all day and thinking about Ronnie the whole time. Somehow I felt this was a death watch, and low and behold that's what it turned out to be. I wish it had turned out differently.

Too soon.

So many songs left unsung....
