The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street (Reissue)

I figured this reissue is noteworthy. Not only is it arguably their best album, but includes 10 additional tracks. Already have my copy pre-ordered.

Rolling Stones to Reissue 'Exile on Main Street' With Unheard Tracks

'Exile on Main Street', the Rolling Stones' classic 1972 album, is set to be reissued with an additional 10 previously unheard tracks.

An announcement on the Stones' official website explains the new material was recorded during the long gestation period of 'Exile...', beginning in1968. New songs include 'Plundered My Soul,' 'Dancing in the Light,' 'Following the River' and 'Pass The Wine,' while the package also includes alternate versions of album tracks 'Soul Survivor' and 'Loving Cup.' Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone magazine that he unearthed the tracks for the reissue at the record company's request, then the singer and Keith Richards tweaked them slightly.

Accompanying the release of 'Exile...' is a new documentary, 'Stones in Exile,' to be shown on network television in the US and through BBC Worldwide internationally.

Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker John Battsek and directed by Stephen Kijak, the documentary features never-before-seen archival film, photos and interviews, as well as conversations with the band and artists they have influenced. Richards said of the early footage, "I must not have noticed all the cameramen while I was making the record. I was amazed at how much footage they actually found."

The 'Exile...' reissue will be available on May 17 in the UK and May 18 in the US in three versions, as a CD with the original 18 tracks; as a deluxe CD edition with the bonus tracks; and in a super deluxe package including vinyl, documentary DVD and a collector's book.
I've heard Plundered My Soul recently on the radio -- it can be heard here.

Further description of the 'Stones in Exile' DVD:
In the spring of 1971 the Rolling Stones departed the UK to take up residence in France as tax exiles. Keith Richards settled at a villa called Nellcôte in Villefranche-sur-Mer and this became the venue for the recording of much of the band s masterpiece Exile On Main Street . Stones In Exile tells the story in the band s own words and through extensive archive footage of their time away from England and the creation of this extraordinary double album, which many regard as the Rolling Stones finest achievement.

Bonus Features
Extensive additional footage including interviews with all the band members, footage from C...sucker Blues and Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts returning to Olympic Studios and Jagger s country house Stargroves where a lot of the early work on the album was done.
A good couple months for Stones fans!

Sounds great, but since I already have two copies of this album, i'll probably hold off for a while. For those who don't want the album, Target is selling a disc with bonus tracks only:

I hear Jagger redid the vocals on Plundered My Soul.

I'd like to hear samples of the remix before I buy it. Exile is one of those albums I've heard so many times (like Abbey Road and Who's Next) I don't know if I could get into it again no matter how good it sounds.

The single that was released on Record Store Day definitely had re-done, modern Jagger vocals. I was not impressed.

I'd really like to have that super deluxe edition, but it seems vastly overpriced. $190 for an extra book, a paltry 30 minute DVD, and vinyl copy? Even Amazon's discount to $120 seems a bit much for what you get.

Might pick up the deluxe cd version. Although I'm not as huge into the Stones as I used to be so it will just depend if the price is right.

I'd prefer just the vinyl reissue of the original album.

Wonder if the tracks are the same as the bonus tracks with the original album. Friend of mine told me there will be a download version that has different bonus tracks than those included on the cd release.

If they remaster this one like the overcompressed abomination that was "Sticky Fingers"... I'd stay far, far away.

Well, if the pre-order pages are correct, Amazon lists the same 10 bonus tracks on the deluxe CD that Target lists for the bonus-only CD.

I might have to pick up the bonus-only CD, I already have the Virgin-remastered version of Exile (I think) and don't listen to it often enough to be worth getting a 2nd copy of the full album.

I'd really like the super deluxe edition, but the price is ridiculous. I thought the list prices of the U2 super deluxe editions were ridiculous....

Let's see, I already have:

- original vinyl in perfect condition (w/ postcards)
- cassette tape in horrible condition
- original CD
- CD re-issue
- CD SE re-issue with mini-postcards

I may as well get this one too.

If they were smart, and they really wanted to introduce their music to new fans they would sell this a ten dollar price point. Instead, they rely on the deep wallets of diehard collectors like slop101.

Well, to be fair, I'll most likely just get the $10 Target version and not that expensive collectible. All the other versions didn't cost me much more than that.

The Target version is $10? Well I stand corrected...

I was wondering the same thing, since I almost bought some of the recent(Universal) remasters being unaware they were newer remasters. So when I looked up reviews of the Universal remasters, many people mentioned how compressed and distorted they were compared to earlier releases.

So do the Universal remasters really sound awful and should I seek out the 1994 Virgin Records remasters instead? Since now it's nearly impossible to find the Virgin remasters in stores, including used cd stores. I hate that just when I was about to start concentrating on building up my Stones 1970s-early 80's collection, potentially awful sounding remasters are mainly available.

I don't think the most recent batch were actually "remasters" but rather they were just loudened.

I've been listening to my 1994 copy which is indeed quiet, but it sounds fantastic.

I don't know why it seems to be such a struggle for the post-ABKCO albums to get the remastering treatment they deserve.

For some reason, Exile has never clicked with me. I know it's supposed to be one of the greatest albums of all time, but for me, it can't hold a candle to Let It Bleed or Sticky Fingers. That said, I'll probably pick up the Target disc with the new tracks.

It was never known as the Stones greatest album until it started being touted as such 15-20 years ago.

I'm the same way, Exile never did much for me. Along with the 2 you mentioned, my other favorites are Some Girls, Goats Head Soap, and Voodoo Lounge.

They can be found, pretty affordably, on eBay. And yes, judging from the advance reviews I've read, it should be worth your effort.
