The best new song mainstream radio is playing now
Think of this as a running thread. What's the best new (<6 month) song that radio is playing?
Right now, I'd say:
Alicia Keys — Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart.

Re: The best new song mainstream radio is playing now
I never listen to the radio, but looking at the top 20 from this list:
http://www.billboard.com/charts/radio-songs
I would have to go with either "Bad Romance" or "Empire State of Mind" (my two favorite popular songs of last year). I can't really stand the other 18 ("Hard" is okay).
EDIT: I went through the others - of 21-40, I only like "Paparazzi."

"Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon was 21 on that list. I'll go with it, since I can say with some confidence that I've heard it and I like it.

I don't listen to the radio for good music. I listen to it for the disposable pop & "hip hop" that's on there so I don't fall asleep during my daily routine.
I honestly think that Ke$ha piece of crap song is probably the best new one on right now!

I am actually kinda shocked by all the Gaga love here, i would have thought most of you would have wrote her off as the pop star who tries to hard to be edgy... ect. I actually like "the Fame". Haven't gotten "fame monster" yet. I do like that its not all electronic/pop music, as there is kind of a rockish ballad and a rock/pop/funk type song on there too, which i wasn't expecting. And the non singles are also damn good and catchy as well.

I usually can't stand anything on mainstream radio, but I gotta give it up for this one.

Re: The best new song mainstream radio is playing now
Totally not a fan of most music on the radio, unfortunately my wife has cds by lost of pop artists. Lady Gaga is tolerable, hate Owl City, and that Kesha song I despise. I just can't stand it, especially when she sings "Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack". Just the way she sounds bothers the hell out of me. Don't really know why.
The only time I ever hear the radio is at work and if one of my workers puts it on some shit I'll tolerate it for like an hour and change that shit. I am their boss after all. Luckily the worst thing I have to deal with is some sappy easy listening crap as far as the radio is concerned.
When they bring in their ipods that's another story. One guy only has Elton John, Billy Joel, and Juey Lewis on his ipod and 8 hours of that isn't ideal. So I know he hates Frampton, Sammy Hagar, and extreme metal. So whenever I want to ruffle his feathers I have a playlist ready for him. Yea I'm a dick.

I was subjected to a pop station today. I was briefly surprised to hear a new Postal Service song -- I didn't even realize they had a new album, let alone that they got radio play. I had this whole radio thing wrong -- it's not all derivative crap.
Thirty seconds later I realized this was a really bad Postal Service song, completely derivative of their first album.
Then the DJ announced that the song was by some group called "Owl City."
Radio is a waste of photons.

I think for the most part corporate radio and the programmer director's don't know squat about what they should be playing to the masses. I'm sure the record execs would prefer a trained monkey over them.

I know a lot of the artists but only 3 of the songs in the Top 40. I hardly ever listen to the radio, got wayyy too many mp3's.

I think Gaga is the closest thing we've gotten to a new Madonna since well, Madonna herself. I think she really has a chance at being the next big pop icon if she can keep this momentum up. She's off to such a great start. She's what Britney should've been while Brit Brit was too busy doing Max Martin crap and trying to cater to 12 year olds at this point in her career.

Re: The best new song mainstream radio is playing now
Another thing that impresses me about Gaga is that she seems to know her stuff about music. She acknowledges Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" as an inspiration for her name, and she has cited Grace Jones and David Bowie as role models. Yet when Avril Lavigne was popular, she infamously said she didn't even know who Bowie or The Clash even were. And poor Britney seemed to be unaware of any music that was made before she was a teenager in interviews. Its really nice to see a young "pop princess" come along who seems to have done her homework in terms of listening to older artists instead of being a typical teen/early 20something and not know anything that isn't from her era, considering I don't think your standard 23 year old is all that aware of Grace Jones for example. So its nice to see someone who seems to be a music fan make it in the industry.

Re: The best new song mainstream radio is playing now
The last song I absolutely loved from the radio was 2008's Gives You Hell by All-American Rejects.
As far as songs I haven't heard on the radio (because radio doesn't play them, it seems) that I love is (Wondering If I want you to) I Want You To by Weezer.
I've sampled some of Gaga's stuff recently, and Kesha's.....nope. Nah. Uh-uh. No can do. And I wasn't too impressed with that song by Kings of Leon, either. Blah! Boring music.
But I will sample more. I will. I'll let you know. Hopefully - and I mean this when I say it - there will be a gold nugget amongst a pile of rocks. I really do want to enjoy some "new music."
