Why Isn't "Jane Says" Mentioned More Often as a Best Song of the '80s?
This song came out in 1988, yet when the "best-of" songs list of the '80s appears, I never see it. Is it because it became popular in the'90s? I don't remember when it hit the airwaves, so was curious if that was an issue. It certainly holds its own against the other songs of its time.

A couple of reasons, IMO. First, the "'80s sound" is identified by either the dark New-Wave stuff of the early '80s, or the bright, brassy synthpop of the mid to late '80s (depending on who's doing the compiling or what audience you're going for). This doesn't fit in either category.
Second, "Jane Says" is definitely associated more with the Alt/Grunge movement of the '90s. It may have been a college radio hit when released, but wasn't heard on Top 40 stations much, for sure.
I consider myself a HUGE '80s music fan, and even I had to Google the name to remind myself what song you were talking about. If I had to guess, I would have placed it as coming out around '93 or '94.

Edit: Nevermind, DefLep song is good.

Probably a region thing. I've never heard it before and after Mr OP posted the horrible vid link with the lyrics you can see he's just trying to be funny.. or something.

I'm amazed people haven't heard that song. Wow. I wouldn't put it in any best of list since Led Zeppelin did it better.

Jane's Addiction gained pretty wide exposure with 'Been Caught Stealing' being played on MTV. But that's from 1990. I, like many others I suspect, only discovered the Nothing Shocking album after Ritual De Lo Habitual came out.

It was never released as a single, and consequently never got a lot of mainstream radio play.

Are you serious? (I never know when you're "on"). Cause I grew up in the armpit of Kentucky, and I only heard it on the radio, and immediately could hear the song in my head when I saw the thread. It's not as catchy "Been Caught Stealing", but I recall liking both songs from back in the day.

To my knowledge, it never was released as a single. Or maybe not until the 1990's.

"Mountain Song", "Ocean Size" and "Jane Says" were released as singles from Nothing's Shocking. "Jane Says" reached number 6 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
It was also included on the "Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the 80s" box set a few years back.

It's obviously not a song, or album for that matter, for everyone but I enjoy it immensely and it's one of my "Best songs of the 80's."

I'm amazed people don't know this song. I can't stand Jane's Addiction (Porno for Pyros, sure, Perry Farrell on his own, fine, but not Jane's Addiction), but you couldn't listen to a modern rock/alternative station in the '90s without hearing Jane Says.

Just a week or so ago I was listening to a podcast about this song:

The podcast is "Lyrics Undercover", where the guy talks about the backstory to lyrics in a song.
