Wow, I would have never expected a human no matter from what origin to claim this. I still think Subliminal Sandwich is one of the best electronic albums ever made. Unfortunately the rest of their playlist has problems for me.

Getting onto my list there's a few I probably left out that deserve it ....

LTJ Bukem (electronic - drum & bass)
Orb (electronic - ambient)
DJ Hardware (electronic - dark house/progressive trance)
Depeche Mode
Flock of Seagulls
Beck
Billy Idol
Led Zeppelin
Alice in Chains (simply, due to Jar of Flies album)
Jimi Hendrix
Van Halen

I'm an 80's kid.

That's not too far off-base. I'd probably say something like:

Good thinking. Here are mine according to Last.fm:

U2
The Rolling Stones
David Bowie
Talking Heads
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Tom Waits
Depeche Mode
Arcade Fire
Devo

In reality, my favorite artists simply don't have as much output as my "most listened to". Some are correct. I consider my Top 10 to be artists who's work I celebrate in it's entirety or at least in strong majority:

U2
The Rolling Stones
Portishead
David Bowie
Fleetwood Mac (Buckingham/Nicks)
The Clash
The Knife/Fever Ray (Karin Dreijer Andersson)
Kraftwerk
Sleater-Kinney
Springsteen

Re: Your Top 10 bands/artists of all-time

I went immediately to typing, as I did not want to read anybody else's lists beforehand.

01: Doors
02: Bruce Springsteen
03: Twisted Sister
04: Weird Al Yankovic
05: Beatles
06: Nirvana
07: Weezer
08: Elton John
09: Metallica
10: Ramones

I'm sure my list is neither specticular nor original, but it is my list. I've been accused of many things, but I'm not ashamed of my love for conventional pop songs.

01: The Doors
Like many, I've had all the cassette albums, and after one side was done, I'd flip it over and listen to the other side, then flip it again to listen to the first side, then flip it again, and again, and again. It was all so great! Not one bad song in the bunch - not even from The Soft Parade, which have the most questionable. True, it is not very Doors-ish, but you get used to even songs like "Do It" and choruses like "Please Please Listen To The Children..."

02: Bruce Springsteen
a lot of my friends look at me and question why I would own more than one Springsteen album, but what can I say? I like the guy, and his "corny" music. I'm not as ga-ga about every single track from an album, but what I do like is more than the average listener of Top 40 music likes. Album tracks from Darkness On The Edge of Town and The River, for example, are better than some Top 40 from that era.

03: Twisted Sister
I don't know how this started........okay, I guess I do know. The video for We're Not Gonna Take It was the reason why I fell in louve with this odd-ball band. Obscure tracks like Bad Boys (Of Rock And Roll) and What You Don't Know Sure Can Hurt You are commercial gems! It's a shame more people don't know these songs.

04: Weird Al Yankovic
To some, this may seem like a waste of an entry. The guy isn't original. The guy got famous from parodizing popular songs. The guy's hair is a joke. The guy plays an accordian! Say what you will, but the hours and minutes and days of joy from listening to his albums that accumuliated into years can never be duplicated, nor would I trade them in for extended years to my own life. Joy. That is what Yankovic brought to my life.

05: Beatles
As much as I love the Beatles, you won't find their songs on my 1960's compilations. Their songs don't fit well. Sounds like a diss, but Beatles music is almost CLASSICAL compared to the clanky songs from that era. Whether they're overpolished, too sophistocated, or both...but Beatles are in a class all their own.

06: Nirvana
I was greatly saddened when I heard about Kurt Cobain's suicide, and not just because we would be left with Eddie Vedder music. In the 1990's, a new Nirvana album was an event, and I eagerly looked forward to new music from Kurt and his friends. As a fan, I can admit I wasn't overjoyed with the album In Utero when it was first released, but after my initial reluctance to accept change, I grew to appreciate the genius that was Kurt Cobain. Even with all the screaming his head off stuff, it's good good stuff. I only wish there was more of it.

07: Weezer
I loved this band immediately, thanks to their video for Buddy Holly. Again, as a fan, I can admit to not being heads-over-heels in love with their 2nd album, Pinkerton - but since then, it has become my absolutely favorite album from Weezer. From any group, for that matter. Rivers wore his heart on his sleeve when he recorded the songs for Pinkerton, and the honesty and raw emotion, on top of the pure power-pop chords, made for a true experience in stereophonic.

08: Elton John
This guy. Sure, he ain't much to look at, but this brother can sing, aiight? He takes the cake from his contemporaries like Billy Joel because Elton doesn't try to be all Mr. Rock And Roll...it's just something he is, and that's the only way I can explain it. He's special without trying to be special. Okay sure, maybe his concert garb was a little expressive, but forget all of that. Pretend you didn't even know what Elton John looked like, that your only exposure to him was from what you heard on the radio. That's what I'm talking about.

09: Metallica
Call me a fan-boy if you like - yes, I first heard Metallica in 1991 with the release of their self-titled album that contained Enter Sandman. Whatever, man, but I'm a fan of this group even if I had to work my way backwards to do it, and go backwards I did! From Metallica I went to ...And Justice For All, then to Master of Puppets, then to...etc, etc. And, like the Doors, I did the flip to each cassette side. Not a bad song in the whole lot.

10: Ramones
Infectious bubble-gum power pop, to be sure, but don't say that to their faces! Maybe everyone tried to pretend they were anything but bubble-gum power pop (I heard rumors that they're considered "punk rock" - hahaha!), but just so long as they're remembered for good tunes, I'm all for it.

I know this is a relative scale and all, but I based my choices on overall value; CDs, concerts, live shows on disc or DVD, etc.

Butch Walker (after #1, all others are relative)

Def Leppard
Harem Scarem
The Clarks
Heart
Prince
Oleander
Steelhouse Lane
ZO2
Silvertide

(Depending on the day, those last 9 spots could also be comprised of Kip Winger, TSO, Wig Wam, Hanson, The Beastie Boys, and/or the Black Crowes.)

Looking back over the lists, it appears that I'm the only one that considered anyone in the classical or orchestral fields in their choices (or anyone outside of "rock", really). I find that hard to believe. Not even a single Mozart?

not in any order

Beatles (everyone still copies the Beatles)
Madonna
James Brown
Metallica
Nirvana
CCR
Johnny Cash
Jimmi Hendrix
Van Halen (for guitar originality)
Run DMC

Mozart? That putz is soooooo overrated...

just kidding ;)

But seriously, this surprises you? For one thing, I'd have trouble listing someone like Mozart for a list like this, even though I like his work, because I've never seen or heard him play anything, obviously. I've only heard others interpret his work and it's enough of a disconnect that I wouldn't consider him as someone to list. If the topic had specified "composers", it might be a different story.

Also, in my personal defense, I listed Miles Davis (Jazz), Brian Eno (mostly for his ambient work) and Ravi Shankar (classical Indian sitar player).

I love the 'Mats -- they are probably my favorite band of the 80s alternative scene -- but I had a very similar experience with the Pixies recently. I was never a huge fan, but for some reason, I rediscovered them a couple of months ago and I'm really digging them.

For my Top 10, let's go with (in no particular order)

Ramones
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Replacements
The Beatles
The Clash
Nirvana
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry

There are a couple of more recent bands (Arcade Fire, the Thermals, Glasvegas, the Killers) that have the potential to wind up on this list if they hold up for another decade or two.

Top Ten of All Time..............wow that's hard considering how much I'm infatuated with certain bands at this point of my life. So I'm sure a few of these bands could change because there are so many great bands out there.

Alice Cooper
Alice in Chains
H.I.M.
Killers
Mastodon
Metallica
Nine Inch Nails
Opeth
Pink Floyd
Type O Negative

even then Sabbath, Ozzy, Beatles, Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Down, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Moonspell, Led, Dimmu Borgir, or Pantera could all be up there at some point as well. Way to hard.

I do like a decent amount of classical music, but I'm definitely more of a Beethoven fan than Mozart. Obviously I wasn't around when it came out but I feel that Beethoven pushed the envelope more, it just sounds that way to me.

Also I just read through everyone else's list and man I really like the love that some killer bands (Rammstein, Fear Factory, DevilDriver, Stabbing Westward) got some love.
