Re: The Cure- "Disintegration" remaster and other goodies to be released Spring 2010
It seems like anytime a CD gets remastered, someone runs in and say the remastering is terrible. I know that loudness has become an issue lately, but I can't believe that every single remaster done in the last 5 years are terrible.

I got this and thought it sounds fine; I was a bit disappointed with "Entreat" which wasn't quite as "lively' as I'd like a live CD to be but the original album sounds great and the demos were interesting to me.

This new Cure disc sounds just fine. One easy way I know it didn't succumb to the loudness wars is that I still have to turn the volume up in order for it to match the output of most current discs made these days. |
Re: The Cure- "Disintegration" remaster and other goodies to be released Spring 2010
Pitchfork rarely, if ever, comment on loudening in remasters. So on the rare occasion they do mention it (as in their review for Disintegration), it's cause for alarm.

And that, to be honest, is the one drawback of this reissue. If I'm remembering correctly, the first pressings of Disintegration actually said, in the liner notes, "this album was mixed to be played loud, so turn it up." It was intentionally created with headroom to spare, and designed to be full of space-- every instrument surrounded by air, every echo trail clear and audible, an album that was above all comfortable to listen to. Like most remasters these days, this one has to pump up the volume toward modern levels, which means smushing things together and making parts fight for space. I'm not so cranky that this usually bothers me, but this is one album where it might really eat away at the point-- those horizons you used to be able to see in all directions have been moved miles closer. |

I saw that review. Makes me sad. I wanted to pick up that reissue but now I might not.

No one complained about the Beatles remasters IIRC.

That is true, The Beatles remasters appear to be the exception that proves the rule. But I know those can't be the ONLY good remasters out there as of late.

Re: The Cure- "Disintegration" remaster and other goodies to be released Spring 2010
I just re-listened to my original Disintegration disc, and I think it sounds fine. If this edition comes up deeply discounted, I guess I'll pick it up. I just don't understand the loudness wars

Re: The Cure- "Disintegration" remaster and other goodies to be released Spring 2010
The remastered "Disintegration" album isn't perfect, but it's not as bad as what I originally thought it would be. There's an obvious bass boost, and I'm hearing more detail in the songs. It sounds like they sacrificed some of the high frequencies to get that.

I was just thinking about "In Orange". Has there been any announcements for it coming to DVD/Blu (and/or "Play", for that matter) since the OP?

It's freaking ridiculous that Smith hasn't taken charge of getting this stuff digitized. Play Out and Picture Show have some awesome interstitial footage that could be in extended versions on a blu-ray or even dvd.

The last thing I want is an album of outtakes from 4:13 Dream.
That trilogy show, on the other hand, I'd definitely go see. |

*Now* maybe In Orange? :)

Well at least finally some movement on a new studio album. But it sounds like the material is already recorded and quite dated. |

It's a cover, but new music!
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/uDxDW9jEjHg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Watch the Cure Cover Hello, Goodbye for McCartney Compilation By Dan Holmes September 9, 2014 | 10:22am Clocking in at 34 songs (plus bonus tracks), the forthcoming Paul McCartney compilation The Art of McCartney aims to be more than a tribute album. Dozens of artists, including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, B.B. King and Kiss have contributed covers to a collection that will celebrate McCartney’s entire career, from his early days in The Beatles to the present. The Cure has chipped in with its version of “Hello, Goodbye,” the band’s first new release in 6 years. The video below captures them (with James McCartney on keys) performing a rendition of The Beatles’ classic that is respectful but suitably warped by Robert Smith’s singular vocals. Producer Ralph Sall has spent more than a decade working to make The Art of McCartney a sprawling anthology that measures up to the unusual scope and importance of its subject’s career. Other contributors to the project include Billy Joel, Smokey Robinson, Brian Wilson, Perry Ferrell, and Dr. John. The Art of McCartney will be available on November 18th. Pleasant enough cover. Had this come out back then, 8th grade me's head would've exploded. The Cure and The Beatles were my two favorite bands during that hormone-charged time.

The remastered concert was shown in a theater for a couple of nights in L.A. last month so this is definitely coming out. I was at the "Reflections" show a couple of years ago and it was awesome, but I can't remember if it was being filmed for possible release. It could be one of the rumored shows on DVD/Blu-Ray.

WOW....first piece of music by RS is 6 years? Crazy how fast time flies. Well looks like he's just enjoying life I guess. Good on him.

Got tickets for next June in Boston. I last saw them in 2004, so I'm pretty psyched.
