I'm a huge Rush fan and I consider it one song. When iTunes burned my 2112 album it considered it as one song as well. Now it does have 7 unique parts but the entire song is called 2112. I can say the same for Cygnus X-1
Book II from the Hemispheres album, that has several parts as well.

with the argument about being as several "suites" would something like "A Change of Seasons" by Dream Theater be one long song, since there are quite a few parts tot that song too

Uh...ok.

Guess I'll wait for the "epic" suites thread. Or the Rush album-by-album thread.

The album consists of six songs:
1. 2112 (20:32)
2. A Passage to Bangkok (3:34)
3. The Twilight Zone (3:17)
4. Lessons (3:50)
5. Tears (3:30)
6. Something for Nothing (3:57)

Sure, 2112 has 'movements' within the first song... but it's still one song. Personally, I can't listen to the 'short' 2112 (just the first two parts, I believe). It's all or nothin' for me.

Re: Favorite "epic" songs?

Pink Floyd's Echoes immediately occurred to me as well.

I would toss this one in as well. My favorite song from one of my favorite groups.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpCCfazKxzk&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RpCCfazKxzk&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And I'll toss this performance up as well, just because this is the one that I was at.

Re: Favorite "epic" songs?

I was going to say 3 days...

I love long songs, I'm sure there's a bunch I'm forgetting, but I'll take:

Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Chain Reaction / Quantum Physics - Can
Stuck inside of Mobile (with the Memphis Blues Again) - Bob Dylan
Supper's Ready - Genesis
So Did We - Isis
Olsen Olsen - Sigur Ros
Sister Ray - Velvet Underground
The Great Curve - Talking Heads
Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
Powderfinger - Neil Young
Cygnus - Mars Volta
The Private Psychedelic Reel - Chemical Brothers
The Disillusionist - The Church
So What - Ministry
TV Eye - The Stooges
Einstein's Day - Mission of Burma (not that long a song, but defnitely epic)
Disintegration - The Cure
The Bomber/ The Woods - Meat Beat Manifesto
Europe Endless - Kraftwerk

Sure, everyone knows the Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler stuff, but he can actually make Barry Manilow and Air Supply listenable and gave the world the only Celine Dion song worth listening to. I wish I could have put the Streisand version of "Left In The Dark" as it's my favorite of her vocals ever. She really nails the grandeur of the track, even more than Meatloaf.

Re: Favorite "epic" songs?

Some great ones in there. I will see your "For Your Pleasure" and raise you both "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" and "Mother of Pearl." Also I will see your "Venus In Furs" and raise you "Heroin," "Sister Ray," and "The Murder Mystery."

But those are all awesome tracks.

It's not rock, but it's one of the finest pieces ever recorded. And it's epic.
