Back in the day my folks saw Three Dog Night. Openers: MC5 and Led Zeppelin.

Re: Concerts with multiple openers, an increasing trend?

I could do without openers, unless it's a band that they have properly paired with the main artists and I'm a fan. More often than not, especially with metal shows, they just put some up-and-coming hotshots on the bill that I couldn't give two shits about. 99% of the time I go to a show, and I have zero interest in the openers, I call the venue ahead of time to see when the headliner goes on and I arrive 10 min beforehand.

Yes I was at this show in 1981 at the LA Coliseum. The topper was when he played Jack U Off and was pelted with socks full of sand. Bill Graham came out and yelled at the audience "I'd like to see some of you pussies get up here and sing"

Being a fan of metal, its hard sometimes, since sometimes you get 4 or 5 openers, i prefer shows that have a theme or where every band is sort of in the same genre

4 or 5? Are you talking about Festivals? Ozzfest, US Show, and the like?

I've never had more than 3 tops.

nope, regular shows. like the new Hatebreed US tour has Cannibal Corpse, Unearth, Born of Osris, and Hate Eternal, which any one of them could headline. Also ive been to shows with 3 national openers and 4 locals open.

Re: Concerts with multiple openers, an increasing trend?

Best opening act I ever saw was when Metallica opened for The Rolling Stones.

But unfortunately, the opening act before that was Everclear.

Most shows I see have one opener, and that includes both big shows and tiny club gigs. I've seen a few shows without any openers, including Rush, Kylie Minogue, The Flaming Lips, and Marianne Faithfull.

Off the top of my mind are Bruce, Floyd and Rush w/o openers. I am sure the are a couple I have missed.

Re: Concerts with multiple openers, an increasing trend?

It's hard for me to fathom no opening bands. Like many of the other metalheads have said many times there are 3-5 bands opening before the headliner. The only show I've been to without an opener was the band Down. They played like an hour long video before the band took the stage but that was it.

As far as openers are concerned, I think it's totally necessary and has helped me learn about all sorts of bands. Especially when a decent amount of metal bands I listen to come from Europe and will come over on a tour with a bigger band. Thanks to actually paying attention to opening bands I've learned about Lamb of God, Mastodon, Gojira (probably the best find since I'm sure I would have found out about the others), and others. Of course it also led me to see shitty artists like DDT or Otep. And yes DDT is the worst opening band ever, the fucking singer sang the entire set through a megaphone into a microphone. Total pile of shit
