Barenaked Ladies - Blame It On Me

Milli Vanilli told you to Blame it On The Rain,
but if you blame it on the rain tell me
what can be gained so,
if all else fails you can blame it on me.

Tenacious D- Dio

Dio has rocked (echo: rocked) for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wilderbeasts and angels,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Woah!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.
Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

Actually, the song was originally written and preformed by SR-71, so don't go giving all the credit to Bowling For Soup - who did a far inferior, if more popular, version of it. The original SR-71 version also has slightly different lyrics, too, which I modified from your post.

And from the same album as the original version - Here We Go Again - SR-71 also had another song along a similar vein called "Axl Rose"...

Where did you go Axl Rose?

Ricky lives alone...mother's basement
37 got nothing to show for it
Heavy metal man with his long hair
The top is gone but he's rockin' the ponytail
All he's got now is post grunge apathy...(catastrophe)
He says The Vines and The White Stripes
Just don't get it for me and my friends
Take me back when...

Whoa, oh...Where did you go Axl Rose?

'Til one night at karakoe
Ricky was kickin' out Bon Jovi
"Dead Or Alvie" I think it was
And right then Angel fell in love

Barenaked Ladies - "Brian Wilson"

Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue,
cause right now I'm

[Chorus]
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.

So I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles.
and I'm thinking about what to think about.
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile,
and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
because I am

[Chorus]

And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox,
wondering where the hell all the love has gone.
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun,
and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun."

[Chorus]

I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
and though I was very heavy,

I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground

Re: Songs that reference another artist/group name?

I could do this all day, and still not hit upon all the ones I know. Here's a few more random ones off the top of my head...

New Radicals - "You get What You Give"

Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson

...lots of songs that reference The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, such as...

House of Love - "The Beatles and the Stones"

Look at him shouting out
Loud as thunder out at sea
He wants a bomb
So do we
A bomb from the sky
Is the perfect crime
Shoulder on shoulder and heat
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
Look at me, proud of being
Proud of being seventeen
Locking in the pocket a smile
Soft from the school
Cut by the rule
Oh I'm dazed and I'm dazed and I'm dazed
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
The Beatles and the Stones
Sucked the marrow out of bone
Put the V in Vietnam
The Beatles and the Stones
Made it good to be alone
To be alone
To be alone
To be alone
(Alone, alone, alone, alone, alone)
To be alone...

Metric - "Gimme Sympathy"

I can feel it in my bones
Gimme sympathy
After all of this is gone
Who'd you rather be?
The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
Oh, seriously
You're gonna make mistakes, you're young
Come on, baby, play me a song
Like, "Here Comes the Sun"

Material Issue - "What Girls Want"

She said...
I want want love, I want drugs, I want sex and affection
I want everyone in this room here to look I my direction
I want a man with lips just like Mick Jagger
Rod Stewart's hair, and Keith Richards swagger

That's what girls want

...and a couple from one of my favorite albums from last year...

Gaslight Anthem - "Miles Davis And The Cool"

Look Miles Davis, I've been swayed by the cool.
There's just something about the summertime.
There's just something about the moon.

Gaslight Anthem - "High Lonesome" (Elvis, Tom Petty & Springsteen refs)

And Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
I always kinda sorta wished I looked like Elvis
And in my head there's all these classic cars
And outlaw cowboy bands
I always kinda sorta wish I'm someone else

There were Southern accents
On the radio
As I drove home
And at night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
It's a pretty good song
Maybe you know the rest

Shawn Mullins-Rockabye

She grew up with the children of the stars
in the Hollywood hills and the boulevards.
Her parents threw big parties. Everyone was there.
They hung out with folks like Dennis Hopper and Bob Seger and
Sonny and Cher.

Re: Songs that reference another artist/group name?

Thanks, some good ones.

another one I remembered:

"Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)"
By the Dead Milkmen

She'll dance to anything
You'll dance to anything

Okay, look at you
Don't you look like Siouxsie Sioux
How long did it take to get that way
What a terrible waste of energy
You wear black clothes say you're poetic
The sad truth is you're just pathetic
Get into the groove get out of my way
I came here to drink not to get laid
So why don't you just go on home
If you want to moan you'll have to moan alone

You'll dance to anything...
You'll dance to anything...

Don't try to tell me that you're an intellectual
Cause you're just another born bisexual
("I met Andy Warhol at a really chic party")
Blow it out your hair cause you work at Hardees
80 pounds of make up on your art school skin
80 points of I.Q. located within
Know what you are? You're a bunch of ...
Artfags! Artfags!
Choke on this you dance-a-teria types!

You'll dance to anything by the Communards
You'll dance to anything by Book of Love
You'll dance to anything by The Smiths
You'll dance to anything by De-peche Mode
You'll dance to anything by Public Image Limited
You'll dance to anything by Naked Truth
You'll dance to anything by any bunch of stupid Europeans who come over
here with their big hairdos bent on taking OUR money instead of giving
your cash, where it belongs, to a decent American artist like myself!
You'll dance to anythIng

Supergrass - Prophet 15:
Well John Belushi, and Lady Day were close by
And Joe the Lion and Marvin Gaye were right there

Jason Mraz - The Dynamo of Volition
I'm tryin' to keep with the Joneses
While waiting for Guns and the Roses
To finish what we all suppose is
Gonna be the shit

Everclear - Thrift Store Chair:
Gonna put a John Prine record on
I think we need to slow it down for a while

Better Than Ezra - Lifetime:
And that REM song was playing in my mind
Three and a half minutes
Felt like a lifetime

Better Than Ezra - Extra Ordinary
:
Though I got more hooks like Madonna got looks.
Just like that AC/DC song
Come on baby shake me all night long

Just like that Barenaked Ladies Song
I'm hot like wasabi when I'm next to your body.

Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Just like Michael Jackson did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that he was talented

I'm rockin' the suburbs
Just like Quiet Riot did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that they were talented

Just like Jon Bon Jovi did
I'm rockin' the suburbs

Counting Crows - Mr. Jones:
I want to be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky

Everclear - Otis Redding

Flight of the Conchords - Bowie

hmm off the top of my head

Local H - January: The One With Kid

Give me my Zeppelin CDs
You know you took 'em, I know you did
Where's my Pretenders record
You know the one, the one with "Kid"
Where's all my AC/DCs
My Interpol, my Libertines
Where's all my Kyuss records
You never liked 'em until you met me
Sensations, frustrations, barbed wire for coronations
My "Heart of Glass" 12-inch is scratched
No matter what it's costing
Make sure you leave with nothing
Won't stand and watch you gut our home

"Pullin mad, so you know it's me
and your weed got more seeds than ODB"-Redman off of Buck 50

Pretty much any rap record.

Put on any Jay-z song and he's either mentioning BIG or using one of his lines.

Awesome - a Nick Lowe reference!

I'm surprised that the Stray Cat's "Gene & Eddie" hasn't come up yet!

"Well be bop a lula she's my baby
Well be bop a lula summertime blues
Well it's something else man and you can't lose
I'm gonna race with the devil and maybe I'll win
And I'm gonna dance with skinny Jim

Well hang on tight you better get ready
We're gonna rock with Gene and Eddie

Halleluja I love her so
bee I bickey bop bo bo go
Cut across shorty you can't fail
She got a red blue jeans and a pony tail

Well hang on tight man you better get ready
Cause we're gonna rock with Gene and Eddie

Well come on everybody let's get together tonight
Say mama can I go out tonight
Well I sure miss you and the twenty flight rock
Get your dungarees on let's a blue jean bop

Well hang on tight you better get ready
Cause we're gonna rock with Gene and Eddie"

Also, another (of I'm sure more-than-a-few) Eddie Cochran reference by Setzer in "'59" as well as another:

"...And Bobby Darin sang "Mack The Knife"
They took Eddie Cochran, what could we do
Once he was gone we knew that rock and roll was through"

Re: Songs that reference another artist/group name?

I've been listening to the new Bleu album for over a week now, and can't believe I forgot to list this one. Lots of references here...

Bleu - "Boy Meets Girl"

I've got a tune for the bride and the groom and how they got here
It starts out with a boy and a girl who met in senior year
She hung out the outside crowd while he disappeared
But the square and the rebel fit together like the treble and bass in their ears

It's like Twisted Sister meets Mr. Mister
It's like Rolling Thunder meets a Careless Whisper
It's like Jesus Jones and The Rolling Stones in a game of Twister
It's like boy meets girl

He went to Boston and got a little lost in a frozen stare (Hallelujah)
She looked at him with an L.A. grin and wondered if he cared (Hallelujah)
He said someday when the Polaroids fade and we cut our hair (Hallelujah)
We'll look back and we'll laugh 'cause the Queen and the Jack made a perfect pair

It's like Twisted Sister meets Mr. Mister
It's like Shout At The Devil meets a Careless Whisper
It's like Motorhead and The Greatful Dead in a game of Twister
It's like boy meets girl
