311 - uplifter (06/02/09)

1. Hey You 2. It's Alright 3. Mix It Up 4. Golden Sunlight 5. India Ink 6. Daisy Cutter 7. Too Much Too Fast 8. Never Ending Summer 9. Two Drops In The Ocean 10. Something Out Of Nothing 11. Jackpot 12. My Heart Sings *13. I Like The Way *14. Get Down *deluxe edition bonus tracks
Wonder if there are any 311 fans at DVDTalk. Their new record UPLIFTER came out yesterday in standard and deluxe versions. The deluxe has a pretty decent 83min DVD called "The Road to 311 Day 2008" which features behind the scene stuff and live performances.
The album itself is decent but feels a little too polished/pop for 311 - you can tell that Bob Rock really exerted his influence. There is very little SA on the record, with him only getting a chance to shine on the later tracks on the record (he's usually just harmony on the chorus instead of getting verses) and P-Nut doesn't get as much to do as usual. The record is growing on me but there are only a handful of 'hard' sounding tracks - a lot of really mellow pop rock tracks - but still infused with typical 311 drums and guitar sound. I'm really liking India Ink, Jackpot, Golden Sunlight and I Like The Way.
I'm sure a lot of people on here think all 311 tracks sound the same and probably aren't interested but I thought I'd see if anyone cared... I've been a loyal diehard fan since '95 so I'm heavily biased
Any thoughts?

Found out about this album a few weeks ago and just picked it up. I like it. To me, nothing will ever match Soundsystem, but this has some great tracks. Thank god they got past From Chaos, which I think was the most poppy and dull album they've put out.

Looking forward to hearing it. They are still great live, and fill our 5000 seat outdoor venue every year which I find to be very impressive considering their commercial "hey day" was in the 90's.

I used to be a huge fan (shit, I saw them live 7 or 8 times), but their music hasn't been doing it for me lately. I listened to this one and only thought about 4 or 5 songs were decent. The single they're playing on the radio is absolute crap. I don't know if it's me or them, but I'm not feeling it any more.

It's quite possible people outgrow or tire of a band like 311, because even when they change things up a bit, it still sounds similar to almost everything else they've done (My sister jokes that there are only 10 different 311 songs that they've somehow formed into a 100+ song catalogue).
They do put on one of the best live shows though. I've seen them a few times and the energy is crazy and the crowds are lively. They always sell out the smaller venues here and the core fanbase has stayed with them all these years. My only issue is the last few times I've seen them, they've played like 55 minute sets...and that was it. Sure they pack what seems like a lot of songs into that time, but every 311 show I've been to in the last few years, I'm always shocked at how short they seem. I've met them and for the most part they're great guys.
If people haven't listened much since the self-titled BLUE ALBUM, I'd give this new one a listen (check out their myspace) because while not as heavy rap rock reggae as that one, the new record has a few cuts that really kick ass.

Yes, 311 does put on great shows. I've seen them 3 or 4 times. I've only listened to the first 4 songs on the new album so far. Hey You gets alot of airplay and I like it. Golden Sunlight is also a pretty good song.

Thats whats great about them woof, they've built this fanbase after the heyday. I've seen them 55 times (I didn't know exact number til last year when someone made me count to see if I'd hit 50 yet and 3-11-08 was number 49), but spread over 15 years, its not that hard to imagine, especially when I could go from Lawrence, KS to St Louis, MO (300 miles apart) and catch 3 shows, sometimes 4. The new album has really grown on me, the first couple listens, I was like its good, but I'm heavily biased, I'll admit it. After the next few listens its starting to grab hold of me. Sure its different than all their other ones, very polished, but still has a positive vibe and flow. Like P-Nut says on the DVD, their music isn't for everyone, but the people who 'get it', really 'get it and never let go'

Hey J-Flow, damn that's a lot of shows! I'm guessing we've been to some of the same shows (hell, you've probably been at all 7-8 shows I've been to) considering every time I've seen them it's been in either Missouri or Kansas. The first time I saw 311 was out in Lawrence at one of the Day on the Hill festivals (I think that's the name) back in, I believe, 94. The Urge and Reverend Horton Heat were also there. I just remember how fucking hot it was and people were passing out all around me. They had to bring a fire truck in to spray people down. Were you at that one?
BTW great avatar.

No, that was the Jayhawk Music Fest and I had just started at Rolla and missed that one, I did see them a few days later (or earlier) I can't remember in Columbia at the Blue Note. But I'm sure I've been to the other shows you've seen! I loved the Urge too, it sucks they called it quits, but those shows with the Urge opening are some of my most memorable, even more than the 311 days...
Yeah, Spearhead is definitely the shiznit these days, I just found out that they are going to be in Orlando the same time I was already going to be there on vacation, so double bonus!!!
