My folks got me the BBC box last year for Christmas, maybe I can get them to do this one this year.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

So I never got around to getting the Monster special edition, and now I've got some extra money to spend I'm re-thinking this. It's still $54 bucks on Amazon, but I could get several DVDs/Blurays from my wishlist for that.

One of the main draws was getting a copy of RoadMovie, but I could probably just find that for cheaper, right?

Anybody have any thoughts on the Monster set after some time has passed?

I am very interested in the redux disc and the live discs, but I already have Road Movie and the outtakes disc on this one doesn't do much for me. So, I am going to wait until I can get one for $40 or less. If I didn't have Road Movie, I might bite at $54.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I ordered Monster and Automatic for the People today from Amazon. AFTP is about 10 bucks more and Monster is about 17 bucks more on Amazon than Deepdiscount wants for them. I tried to get Amazon to budge on a price match but they will not do it. I can still cancel, but I have already downloaded all of the tracks for Monster because of the included download. So, I'm not sure how that would work.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I still haven't found a good price on this. I was at B&N the other day with a $100 gift card, and it was still $80 so bought books for me and my son instead.

I don't suppose there's a foreign version that's cheaper but still has a Region 1 DVD of Road Movie is there?

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I got the Monster deluxe set in and will have to send it back. The packaging looks nice but sucks when it comes to the disc sleeves. They have a death grip on the discs and they come out scratched when you have to put your thumb and index finger on them to tug them out. What a ridiculous way to package a 60 dollar set.

Yikes, definitely making me rethink it. The BBC set had decent sleeves, not sure why they wouldn't replicate that.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I would grab the BBC set if it ever went below $50. The problem these days is the labels don't overmanufacture their limited edition sets anymore, which lowers the need to discount them. Too many music boxes go out of print before ever really going on sale.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

Yep, the tight as a knot cardboard sleeves don't give without a violent tug. They also leave the discs scratched and marred with fingerprints from having to grip them. These are almost always a poor choice of disc holders to go with for cds and dvds. Even the one blu ray came out with a few marks on it.

It's on backorder, but it is on sale for $49.31 at DeepDiscount. The Monster set is on sale for $40.06 at the moment.

Ok, I couldn’t resist at 40. I’ll rip them and store them to avoid wear and tear if I have to.

re: Monster special set

Came today, was stuffed into my small mailbox but the cardboard mailer was fairly strong. I didn't realize the book part was so thick, this is a really nice looking set.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

I bought a used copy of the Out of Time 4 disc set from a seller through Amazon. It came out to about 47 bucks. The seller tried sending me the single disc original cd a few days ago. Got my money back on that one. Then ordered a used copy of Donnie Darko soundtrack shipped and sold by Amazon. Got a DVD instead of another movie with Donnie in the title. Amazon has to do better than this.

I’ve never had an Amazon order go that badly.
I ordered the Monster set from DeepDiscount.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

Two used orders in a row. I have to send the cd back to them. They are not asking for the dvd back. I'd rather have the item I actually ordered.

For whatever reason, I bypassed the remix initially. Not realizing it is a TOTAL & drastic re-working of the album. The vocals are brought up front & a lot of the 'fuzz' is gone. I'm not sure if it's better or worse, but it's a definitely a new experience. It's disorienting hearing one of my favorite albums sounding this different, using entirely the same takes. Very much the highlight of this set now that I've realized this.

I got my set a few weeks ago and still haven't gotten through all of it. I'll try to listen during work this week.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

OK, listening to the remix version now, several tracks in and there are noticeable differences with the vocals being much easier to understand. I have always struggled with understanding song lyrics, and as much as I've always enjoyed the tonal feel of Monster, the lyrics were particularly hard to make out, but on this version they are so much clearer. I might rip this version to iTunes for regular listening since it's so much clearer.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

Hmm, I’ll see what the extras and pricing look like. It’s a good album but not sure about another big box set.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

As long as it has a 5.1 Blu-ray, that's all that matters.

Re: R.E.M.: Deluxe Edition Reissues Thread

Does anybody know if the Road Trip movie on the Monster box set is the same as the single DVD? I was going to sell that off if so.

thanks
