Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

I can't stand his voice and how he "ruined" (for me... just my opinion) Faith No More, but I TOTALLY RESPECT AND APPRECIATE him for heading a record label, doing what he wants, and releasing Melvins and Fantomas CDs.

As mentioned above, Mike Patton composed and performed the soundtrack for Crank: High Voltage. Check out some samples from it here.

Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

from Billboard:

Alan Moore, Mike Patton Collaborating On New Work

May 21, 2009 08:54 AM ET

He may have insisted his name did not appear on the "Watchmen" movie. But legendary comic book writer Alan Moore has been enthusiastic in his partnership with U.K. indie Lex Records on the release of a new work including an audiobook and soundtrack.

Moore has already recorded the two-hour audio book for the deluxe package of the semi-autobiographical work, which is likely too appear in early 2010.

"It has a score by some artists and the visual side of it is amazing," Tom Brown, founder of London-based Lex, tells Billboard.biz.

The score that accompanies the book is being worked on by Andrew Broder of alternative act Fog and spoken word artist Adam Drucker. Brown says musicians in the frame to provide key elements of the soundtrack include Mike Patton of Faith No More and Justin Broadrick, formerly of industrial metal band Godflesh.

Patton is working on separate Lex project with Tunde Adebimpe of U.S. alt-rock act TV on the Radio.

"Mike Patton has a really hectic year because Faith No More has reformed and they are doing the festivals," says Brown. "I know they have both [Patton, Broadrick] been sounded out and they said they are both into it."

Brown says that Lex's deluxe release will include the book - which Brown describes as a "photographic novel" rather than a graphic novel like Moore's "Watchmen" or "V for Vendetta" - as well as art prints, a two-hour audiobook recorded by Moore (possibly on a memory stick) and the soundtrack on vinyl. It is not yet clear if the soundtrack will get a separate release on CD or as a download, but Brown says he wants this to be a special release and was partly inspired by Radiohead's deluxe version of "In Rainbows."

"It's grown out of our production values and the music we work on," he says of the project. "We are being ambitious with it. By working with artists outside music, you can make releases that are really worthwhile."

Although Brown says he doesn't want this release to be "elitist" he says it's important for indies to set up new revenue streams in the face of a declining CD market and small margins on downloads.

Of working with Moore, he says it's "refreshing to meet somebody that important, culturally, that's really down to earth and still into the core of what they do."

During the recording of the audiobook in Northampton, where Moore lives, the process was filmed for possible inclusion in the box set.

"It's the first volume of a series and it is definitely in the direction of an autobiography," adds Brown. "I know that he's writing another volume at the moment." He adds that it is provisionally titled "Unearthing" and says it is possible the book will get a separate release by a publisher.

Moore has made forays into music, although it is not clear if he will contribute to the soundtrack.

Lex artists include Neon Neon, MF Doom and Danger Mouse. The label has had an upstream deal with EMI.

Damn, this album is good (if a little short) and well worth the wait. Two selections - just two, them's the rules - and some original versions: lick the sink in my clig.

Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

I wonder why he didn't just make it a 2-disc set considering he recorded a good 23 songs for this way back when. Still, I really, really dig a lot of it. Love his version of "Deep Down".

Yeah, for as long as we waited this should have been a 2-disc easily.

I could've sworn a year or so ago I read that this was supposed to be a 2 disc set, too, so when I saw the tracklist a couple of months back I was confused. Still, although it's short I find it very enjoyable.

My only issue is that over the last year I listened/watched the live versions on Youtube so much that I'm used to THAT sound, and some of the tracks are slightly different on the album, but it's still all good.

I think Patton's version of "Deep Down" is my favorite Morricone cover of any sort - and I've heard quite a few, from k.d. lang to Merzbow & Cock ESP. I'd go so far as to say Patton is the first singer to do the song's melody justice. Here's a good interview with Patton about the album.

After a couple more listens it isn't an issue for me anymore. I'm really enjoying the cd.

Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

Ok, not sure if this applies as I'm mainly into his work with Faith no more but what the hell.....

I am a FNM fan but I always see a lot of comments regarding Angel Dust as "way of ahead its time when it was released" - I remember when it was released...I was actually happy back then that it wasn't in the same tune as the real thing but I never thought of it as way ahead of its time - but then again, I don't think any album ever is - I do recall how weird I thought it first was (almost to the point of not wanting to listen to it) but the more I listened, the more I liked it.

Few of my favs:

Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

from Consequence of Sound:
Ever the eclectic rock ‘n’ roll everyman, Mike Patton is slated to release his next bombshell of a mindfuck: Music From The Film and Inspired By the Book The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi). As per its title, the album was derived from a score Patton wrote for a film inspired by Paolo Giordano’s best-selling book. The release finds itself on a prime date (ahem, 11.1.11, yes it is a Tuesday), and that’s no coincidence. Described by Patton as a “sonic departure” from his mixed bag of tricks, the new LP takes Patton’s obsessive-compulsive spirit to that exclusionary realm of numerology. Meaning the idea of prime numbers is central, in case you fried your brainbucket in the Faith No More days). Patton’s sticking to the theme, too. Everything from the track listing to the release date will only be divided by itself. And 1. And every long-winded rock critic.

Confused yet? The highly eccentric (if not esoteric) effort will be issued on Patton’s own banner of the avant-garde, Ipecac Recordings. And, no, we didn’t screw up the tracklist below – they’re all ordered by consecutive prime numbers.

Music From The Film and Inspired By the Book The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi) Tracklist:
02. Twin Primes
03. Identity Matrix
05. Method of Infinite Descent
07. Contrapositive
11. Cicatrix
13. Abscissa
17. Isolated Primes
19. Radius of Convergence
23. Separatrix
29.The Snow Angel
31. Apnoea
37. Supersingular Primes
41. Quadratix
43. Calculus of Finite Differences
47. Zeroth
53. Weight of Consequences

Looking forward to the Prime Numbers album... and I actually just got the Fantomas "Director's Cut Live" dvd. I'll probably watch it within the next week. Glad to see a Neil Hamburger commentary on there, too, as I'm also a big fan of him.

Re: The Mike Patton News & Appreciation Thread

I'm not even sure what to try to expect when someone describes it as a "sonic departure" from Patton's output. The guy kind of defines the phrase, along with Bjork, to an extent. Should be interesting, at the very least.
