The DOOM appreciation thread

Anyone listen to DOOM? Or even know what DOOM is?

Skepticism's new CD came out recently, which got me back into listening to more doom again. There's a lot of sub-genres of DOOM, but what I'm most into is Death-DOOM, which sounds a lot like death metal, but a lot slower, and should generally have some kind of depressive quality to it.

Skepticism - The Arrival (more funeral-DOOM, than Death-DOOM, really)

Evoken - Quietus

Morgion - In Ashen Tears (thus I cry)

Anyone else got any good depressing DOOM to spread?

Re: The DOOM appreciation thread

Shouldn't this have been in the Metal thread that's been floating around somewhere?

Anyway, this thread is invalid without mentions of Reverend Bizarre, Mournful Congregation and My Dying Bride right off the bat.

Re: The DOOM appreciation thread

Eh, I think DooM deserves it's own thread. Never heard of Revered Bizarre or Mournful Congregation. I didn't include My Dying Bride, mainly because besides their first album and an EP or 2, I don't really consider what they do as real DOOM. It's more goth with a few growly highlights. Plus, having been a long time listener of My Dying Bride, I've finally come to the conclusion that their lyricist is a hack. He's just been recycling the same "dark" lyrics over and over for the last 4 or 5 albums.

Anyway, if you have some good DOOM suggestions, by all means, give us some youtube links!

I'm more a fan of instrumental doom, although Reverend Bizarre is pretty damn good (assuming you can adjust to his vocals):

The new Pussygutt album is an epic single track, and after 20 minutes of Sunn O)))-esque droning doom, the strings that come in bring it into impressive new territory. Speaking of Sunn O)))... Some of their amazing collaboration with Boris:

Not so much my style, but a classic nonetheless (with a wonderfully corny video): Candlemass' "Bewitched"

RE: Revered Bizarre ... yeah, that is some strange vocals goin on there

Here's a few classics from the early 90s, some of the earliest death/doom.

My Dying Bride - Sear Me (just a sample, couldn't find whole song)
One of the few interesting songs on their first full album .. lyrics in latin even!

Anathema - Under a Veil (of black lace)
I love the guitars here, so mournful
And I always get a kick out of cookie monster vocals singing "I loved her ... but now she's GONE!"

Paradise Lost - Gothic
A different sound than the other 2, but they always seem to be lumped together, so here you go

All 3 bands went on to abandon their death/doom roots, to varying success.
