I was wondering this myself. Did some googling and it would appear that every release of Death Magnetic (CD, vinyl, downloads) is afflicted with this problem.

The only way you can hear the album without the clipping is through the Rock Band downloads.

can someone tell me if this is 'clipping' or if its the natural sound when the bass is turned all the way up?

I don't have a problem with bands releasing "hot" mixes for the radio or for iTunes. But the CDs should be as uncompressed as possible.

It's definitely clipping at that point, but it certainly sounds intentional and I wouldn't have a problem with it there.

There aren't any "Rock Band downloads".

Here are 4 different CD releases of "Something" by the Beatles: a Japanese release (maybe a bootleg?) of Abbey Road from 1983, the U.S. release of Abbey Road from 1987, the U.S. release of 1967-1970 from 1993, and the U.S. release of 1 from 2000.

This thread was very educational. I'd noticed that modern music didn't have any space, but I had thought that the cause was having an instrument at every frequency.

I also looked for myself at particular tracks from Rage Against the Machine and OK Computer that always give me a headache. By God, they were both glued right to 0 dB.

The only time i have issues is when there are so many instruments, that some things get drowned out. take this song by nightwish for instance
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ecLWuo2UVCA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ecLWuo2UVCA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
in particular the chorus about 2:33 min in, when you have a full on 100 piece orchestra, guitar, bass, double bass drums, and a singer, and at times the guitar and the drums get drowned out. Ironically the only time you can really hear the bass guitar is at 8:09 when the backup singer/bassist gets to sing.

I agree, short and to the point to help one actually "see" this problem.

i had a question too, why do so many people on the board hate the most recent Iron Maiden remasters (the ones with the slipcover). they sound amazing to my ears. the only minor issue that i have with it is that the second guitar part in "The Number of the Beast" is about the same level as the first part. And thats only a little issue. the rest of the albums sound great. if anyone can find audio samples comparing older editions, that be great.

Loudness war

It's not a bootleg, it's a flat transfer to CD of the tape that EMI used for their "pro-use" vinyl pressing of Abbey Road. It was made without Apple's permission and deleted.

The 1 CD gives me a fucking headache.

Re: Loudness wars... do they bother you?

Just wanted to mention here that next week's release of Rush's Retrospective 3 features remixed and remastered versions of "One Little Victory" and "Earthshine".

If there was any doubt they were aware of how bad Vapor Trails sounded I think that's gone. I can only hope they are working on all tracks for a full remaster release.

^ I would buy a Vapor Trails remaster in a heartbeat! I may have to pick up Retrospective 3 in the meantime, although I've never been a fan of "hits" collections.

Re: Loudness wars... do they bother you?

I remember there was talk back in 2004 when the other Atlantic remasters came out that Vapor Trails would be among the remasters. I think at the time there could have been fear of backlash for releasing essentially a "fixed" version 2 years later.

If they do it now, it's been 7 years so they probably won't piss as many people off. I don't even care if I have to buy the record again - I just want it to sound good.
