does anyone else like Genesis' Abacab album?

I know people love to bash Phil-era Genesis, but I honestly don't see how anyone can hate this album. I think this came out at a great time, Phil was really coming into his own artistically, but he wasn't yet cashing out and catering to the housewife market which ended up being his artistic undoing. But right here, he is in top form and the band probably never rocked harder. It was more pop-oriented than the Gabriel era, but at the same time, it wasn't AC like Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance, and the songs rocked harder than they probably ever did before or since. Dodo/Lurker, Me And Sarah Jane, ABACAB, Another Record... this album is almost perfect, and I hate when people say all Phil-led Genesis sucks when I think this album alones proves that isn't the truth.

What do others think?

I like the songs that I've heard from it. I haven't heard the whole thing, but I've always had a favorable view of the album...

And the song, "Abacab," is a great, great song!

Yes it is, but my favorite song on the album is "Man on the Corner", i remember when this album came out in the early eighties and hanging out at my friends house across the street from mine i was like 12 or 13 years old then and remember her parents (really cool parents) playing the shit out this album along with "Aldo Nova's debut album" and "Journey's Escape album" two more great albums, great times & music yes in deed.

They had me from Duke 'til Invisible Touch. However, I didn't think much of We Can't Dance.

Though I do like Jesus He Know Me for some reason..

"Like It or Not" I'm just a "Man on the Corner" who thought it was just "Another Record" and I really have "No Reply at All"

Good album, but I'll take what Gabriel was doing at the same time over it.

Good album, but not nearly as good as Duke, which preceded it. Abacab is a great song, but the best version of it is on Three Sides Live, not Abacab. Whodunnit is the only crappy song on the album.

Patrick Bateman, is that you?

I'm the kind of guy that only knows the band's singles (the exception: I own the Invisible Touch album), but I like what I've heard off of this one.

I haven't heard Three Sides Live in long time but it is a great record. Some of the Abacab songs sound kind of wimpy to me in studio form but live they have more energy.

My personal favorite Genesis record is A Trick Of The Tail.

Same here. Along with Wind and Wuthering and And Then There Were Three make up my favorites.

I don't think the 80s pop stuff is as bad as the bum rap it gets, but not as good as the 70s. Home By The Sea and Mama are kickass songs, especially live.

I love the album and the song. But then again, I like all of Genesis (including Ray Wilson.. how I wish they'd have kept going with him!).

I used to like it but it hasn't aged well. I have a hard time listneing to any Genesis after Wind and Wuthering. They got progressively crappier and more Phil Collinsy with each album.

Whodunnit is probably the worst song they ever did.

I doubt I've heard it in 20 years, but I don't have fond memories.

My favorite Genesis album is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Abacab is the best of the Genesis pop albums. But to say they never rocked harder is just not true. Listen to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway for the proof that they could indeed rock harder than on Abacab.

Great pop album. The album's engineering basically set the template for the next ten years of recordings as well. Favorite track: "Keep it Dark"
