Hard Rock and Heavy Metal for Haters...

OK, I'm just curious as to what the people who say that they hate Hard Rock and Heavy Metal think about these.

Melodic...

I dislike almost everything above, except for Sabbath and Megadeth. Despite my love of metal, I never got into "Heavy Metal".

And next time, put the name of the band and song in the list, so I don't have to load every video.

It took me a little bit before i could appreciate the 80's style high pitched vocals, as i used to not be a fan.
This is the stuff more up my ally (although i still do love most early Maiden, and some Priest)

Rypro - that's some pretty extreme stuff. Somehow I don't think the haters are going to like it...

(The point of my original post is to try to pick some more accessible stuff out that people who say they hate Hard Rock and Heavy Metal might at least find acceptible - or even like a little. And if they still don't like it to explain what it is about those songs that they don't like. Like I said, I'm just curious.)

Rypro - my man, great stuff. I'm a big metal head and I had the same issues with 80's "high" vocals that you did. I recently opened myself up to bands like Iron Maiden and KISS and I'm glad I did because they fuckin' rock.

Here's a sampling of some of my favorite heavy artists...

Amon Amarth - Pursuit of Vikings

Decapitated - Spheres of Madness
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vfRT5FZYI10&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vfRT5FZYI10&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Sepultura - Arise
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pXpHHikd2NA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pXpHHikd2NA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Death - Crystal Mountain

I listened to everything you posted and the reason just about all of it is not something I like is because it's cheesy. Too many HM songs are just so serious that it all comes off like Spinal Tap. Maybe because I was in my early teens when Kiss was popular, but I do love the "Black Diamond" vid you posted and I also like a few Judas Priest songs. Hell, I even think Def Leppard's song "Photograph" is great (but every other song I've heard from them sucks).

I think maybe there is a fine line between some of the punk I enjoy and metal.
I liked The Misfits. A band like Fear rocked out, but with lyrics that were funny. These bands had an ecomony of style about them. They didn't go off into wankery land with extended solos and seemed to be in on the joke. Of course, that opens me up to why I didn't care for Hair Metal since a lot of that is just party music with silly lyrics, but it also came off as pure cheese in a very bad way.

Sometimes it's hard to explain, I just know when I hear something and don't like it

I always liked their first cd On Through the Night. It was their first and to my knowledge, the heaviest. To me, they have sold out after their first two albums and moved in to a Bon Jovi style of band, which is when I lost interest in them and passed them by.

Honestly, I thought most of them were pretty boring. Sorry, but you might think they are kickass, but they made me want to go to sleep. Play some Stooges or MC5, or X, or Dead Boys, or some The Damned, just something that actually rocks. But to me, this was just lame.

The KISS version of "Black Diamond" would have been fine (I love that song) but Paul Stanley's guitar was horribly out of tune. You might think all these guys are great musicians, but if they can't even keep their instruments in tune they are amateurs as far as I'm concerned.

Metal and other heavy, loud music isn't really my thing, but I do like some Melodic Rock, which isn't too far off.
You might like the Swedish band House of Shakira. "In Your Head" is a great song:

The Seventh Key has a couple of stellar songs. "Always from the Heart":

"The Sun Will Rise":

In this genre, I also like:
-Terry Brock
-Stan Bush
-Mecca
-Blanc Faces
-Dare
-Over the Edge
-Pride of Lions
-Street Talk
-Vertigo

It's not the musician's job to keep the guitar in tune. Ever heard of a guitar tech?

That was a major TV production. The band gets their guitars, plugs in, and plays. And they hope to hell that the guitar techs did their jobs right.

But, good grief, if you like the MC5, or X, or the Stooges how can you EVER criticize ANY band for having a guitar out of tune??? Talk about bands that rarely played IN tune!!!

(And did you miss the Thin Lizzy tune? To me that's what Classic Rock/Hard Rock is all about!)

As someone who's been a gigging musician for the past quarter century, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

They had integrity, once upon a time. 'City' is still, and will forever be, an intense masterpiece. I used to love SYL & Devin's solo albums but can't stand what they've become.

Devin broke the band up 2 years ago.

Really?

Have you ever HAD a guitar tech? Do you have any idea what kind of a production a show like that is? You should, but your statement that relying on a guitar tech being rediculous is just asinine.

Big time musicians have guitar techs - it's the guitar tech's job to tune the guitar. When you're up on stage being filmed you can't just stop and go, "Oh, wait a minute, I need to tune my guitar." That just doesn't happen - not unless it's on your dime. That show wasn't on their dime. It was paid for by someone else who was paying for all of the crew involved with the filming. The band has a tight schedule - get up there and play.

And Paul's guitar wasn't that out of tune. Ever heard of the saying, "Close enough for Rock and Roll?" For someone who brought up MC5, the Stooges, and X it's beyond ridiculous that you would nit pick that guitar tuning! I've heard an MC5 live album, and their guitars were WAY more out of tune ON AN ALBUM than Paul's guitar was for a live performance on TV.

Jeez, man. Talk about ridiculous...

Wow, something for everybody here

KillerCannibal I'm not much on newer metal, but that Amon Amarth track was pretty good. The vocals were just growling enough to sound mean, without sounding like Cookie Monster.

For viking metal, I still prefer these guys. Mother Earth, Father Thunder by Bathory. The single heaviest thing I've ever heard in my life.

Norm de Plume, that Seventh Key song was incredible. Have you ever heard Brother Firetribe?

Bingo. I think we've discovered one of the reasons your tastes run counter to others here. I can't even guess how many shows I've seen in small clubs that blow away anything I've seen in a big arena. I'd guess that the majority of these small club bands tune their own instruments. If that's not something you've experienced then you are clearly not listening/watching the same stuff I am.

Of the videos posted above, I'd have to agree that the Stooges and X simply knock the snot out of these "metal" bands. More grit. More creativity.

I think it's fairly obvious from wendersfan statement that while he may be a gigging musician, he's never come close to reaching that level of success to warrant having a guitar tech. But just because he does it himself, doesn't make him more legit, or them any less so. Personally, I've been the guy tuning my own guitar on stage, and I've worked doing it for other people, too. A gig is a gig.

It's also quite obvious he's a bit of a music snob - which is his right to his own opinion, but doesn't make him right. There's plenty of stuff out there that I can't stand - like some of the bands wends mentioned - but I still keep an open mind about it. I also never fell for that whole "Indie cred" BS, either. Just because "A" band is more successful than "B" band, or while "B" band may have more critical acclaim than "A" band - it doesn't necessarily make either of them better than the other. I say like what you like, and F@*! all to the rest. If it moves you, it moves you, and it shouldn't matter who's doing the moving. My music collection number into the high thousands - and it's safe to say it's pretty varied (and should be). I dig The Stooges and Iggy Pop, but give me KISS over them any day of the week. I like some of X, but given the chance to go see one of their shows today, or someone like say, UFO, I'm going to see UFO.

And you're also right that he makes a poor point talking about Paul Stanley's guitar being out of tune, and using the band examples he gave. If anything, most punk (and similar styled) artists likely have never played in tune. But that's the beauty of rock and roll - it just doesn't matter.

I've seen a lot of club shows. My brother's band is great, and they tune their own guitars - but it sure slows the show down and looks amateurish.

Of the videos posted above, I'd have to agree that the Stooges and X simply knock the snot out of these "metal" bands. More grit. More creativity.
More creativity? Well, if you're talking about guys with more limited playing ability trying to write songs that they can actually play, then, yeah - you're right.

Seriously, though, my problems with bands like X or the Stooges is the poor vocals and the lack of strong melodies and hooks. It goes beyond, "Gritty," and gets into the sloppy and dischordant.

That's why I love straight ahead Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. It's got power, it kicks ass, it's got more musical complexity than those bands you're citing, but it also has really strong melodies.

Too much to go through. I'm not watching all that.

I liked that Y&T album when it came out, but it didn't hold up too well for me. I was DJing once a few years ago and played something off that and someone mentioned how it sounded like Sammy Hagar, which kind of ruined that band for me.

Judas Priest "Screaming For Vengeance" is my favorite Priest album.

Only liked Megadeth's first 3 albums.

KISS rules, of course.

Did someone above really say that Billy Zoom rarely plays with his guitar tuned properly?
