Since I cannot stomach Rap/R&B/Dance genres whatsoever and consider every "artist" within equally horrendous, I am going to have to go with Fleetwood Mac. I despise their look, their melodies, and that quivering, nervous voice that Stevie Nicks spews up from her larynx. Shudder.

are jonas brothers a band? I can't go onto amazon or itunes without seeing their picture, is okay to hate them without hearing their music?

also John Fogerty.

And I know a lot of people that hate the beatles, nirvana, white stipes all because "they're too popular and so overrated". Which is a b.s. answer because what does that have to do with their music?

At the Drive In/The Mars Volta/Sparta - This was the interesting part of the discussion. We both agreed Sparta sucks. But we differed on the other two. Little bro feels ATDI could have been the next big thing...I felt they tried to be a "punk" version of Rage Against the Machine and they weren't very good at it. I feel Mars Volta could be the next big thing, but they are too weird for the public at large. Little bro felt they were too much like Zep to be anything more than a novelty act.
Wow, you didn't really listen to At The Drive-In did you? Musically that band was nothing even close to Rage Against the Machine, at all. Cedric's voice was a little similar, tonally, but that's really where the comparison stops. Also, Sparta's first album was horribly underrated. Everything after that, I agree, wasn't that great, though.

I meant it more on an attitude level, not sound. At The Drive-In was unique, but they simply did not appeal to me.

I wonder if things would have been different if "Nevermind" wasn't as huge as it was. When you look at the rest of their body of work, there is a lot of fantastic stuff, but everyone knows "Nevermind" is it get diluted a bit.

On the rapper note, a rapper is someone who is on top 40 and Hot 97. An artists is the one with merit.

Attitude-wise they also couldn't have been more different but to each their own.

I suppose...I always felt that had that Rage feel to them. Also I feel that is what kept them from stardom. I recall going to a show where they opened (I don't remember which at the moment) and a lot of people in the crowd calling them a Rage ripoff, again not sonically.

Sonically was a different story. They had a very DIY/punk approach, I actually like that side of things. But it just didn't come together. And the irony is, I love the Mars Volta. So maybe I need to give them another shot.

Yeah, I'm kind of on the other side of the fence., Not a big Mars Volta fan (my wife loves them) but I was really into At the drive in. I just listened to Relationship of Command and In Casino Out last night, after having kind of forgot about them for a while and they are still amazing albums.

I have come to find that The Mars Volta really poloraizes people. It is love or hate. Little bro and I were discussing the differences between Mars, At The Drive-In and Sparta.

We were both in agreement about Sparta...they suck, but there are a few moments.

We differed on Mars, I said they could be the next big thing if MTV & radio weren't the ways to find new music. Little bro thought they were simply too weird for mainstream and that the cryptic nature of their albums repels people.

We also differed on ATDI. He liked them a lot of felt there were on the verge of something big. He liked the complicated song structures (little bro plays guitar), lyrical content and energy. I felt the same, but (as outlined above) they did not click with me.

I should also note that at the time I tried ATDI, I was really into metal and likewise music, so it made of clouded my judgment about the band. I currently own all of the albums (got them from little bro), so I will give them another go and see if my opinion has changed at all.

I personally despise the Killers, for a few reasons.

1. Ego.
2. Ego.
3. Ego.
4. They try to write big rock anthems, but the songs are too short and have no build up to a climax, they tend to start out with the same level of urgency as they peak with. I know it's apples to oranges, but listening to a killers song that has no buildup and then comparing it to something else recent, like The Decemberists Crane Wife Part 1 which imo has an outstanding build before part 2 kicks in.
5. Ego.

I'll go with Randy freakin' Newman, cause I can't stand the fucker, and Harry Chapin, because his songs make me want to slit my wrists.

Kid Rock

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Rolling Stones - although some of there 80's material was good.

Anything catagorized as "Rap" hate that stuff, although that "Humpty Dance" tune is pretty catchy.

Right on! The Stones were sucking in the 70's and that 60's material was almost embarrassing. But the 80's! That's where it's at. Especially all those albums after Tattoo You.

(edit... spelling)

(Although I really liked the attitude of the Dirty Work album, it's just that the songs were just thrown together and nothing on the album matched their previous stuff. And Steel Wheels was a nice return to form, but not as good as the stuff from the 70's.)

Pretty much everything on the Billboard Top 50. Looking at this weeks list out of 50 artists, I can only stand Coldplay, Jason Mraz (both barely), and Flobots

Madonna has been in charge of what she does since day one and many of the songs that were on her debut were composed and demoed by her long before she signed to Sire in 1982 (Burning Up goes back to 1980 for example), not fair to call her a puppet ala Britney or Miley just because she doesn't mind singing safe pop songs.

I stopped listening to Madonna in 1993. She hasn't done anything good since then, and I just can't stand her anymore.

Altho I love her first album - that's pretty much it.

Have to disagree, her theme song "I'll Remember" to the 1994 movie "With Honors" is truly her last great song.

That's funny. I was into lots of metal and starting to get more into punk and hardcore, because I was starting not to like sleeveless shirts and dirt staches. At the drive in was not even remotely traditional at all and it was really exciting at the time for me. As for Sparta, totally agree their last two albums have sucked, but Wiretap Scars is amazing. You should seriously check it out again.

Not long ago I gave a listen to all of their work from '85 to today and there are actually some pretty good songs scattered throughout those albums. Just kind of funny thinking that stuff touches 1973.

Metal started to get boring after I went to Ozzfest in 2002 and saw all the kids that got into it because of The Osbournes. Then all this cookie cutter stuff came out and I started looking into other genres. Good move on my part.

I have ATDI on my iPod as we speak, so I will probably listen to it on my plane ride to Detroit on Friday.

I will certainly check out that first Sparta again. I have the last two and they both sucked big time.

My Chemical Romance....there is a band that has amazing visuals, but their music sounds like nails on a chalk board. But "The Black Parade" was a set in the right direction...and I liked it.
