"(Hit Me)Baby One More Time" 10 years later

I know, its kind of scary to think that this song and video came out in 1998. I was 13 when this came out (now 23).

i was on wiki, and was amazed at the success of this song. That it is the 35th best selling song of all time by the united world chart. And that it was originally written for TLC but they rejected it.

it's scary to realize Britney's been around ten years, and IMO.... she still has yet to evolve musically.

I remember in 99 thinking she was going to be like Tiffany, have a year or two of hits and then fade into oblivion, I admit I was wrong.

Wait until you're with a girl. It'll be even better.

I remember buying the single. I bought that and a Reel Big Fish CD the same time. Why the hell do I remember that?

I remember being in high school and some of my friends inexplicably buying the single (I say inexplicable because I thought these people had taste). I remember thinking she was going to be a complete fad and disappear. If only I had been right.

I was the same way, everyone seemed to love the song besides me, and I was predicting she was going to not be able to get arrested by Jan 1, 2000

Never took to the Britney version, but love the Fountains of Wayne cover.

One of those cases where a great song was hiding in there all the time just waiting to come out.

This thread reminded me of something I have tucked away in the back of a drawer somewhere. When the song first came out, I was walking through a store and saw this item. I thought it was kind of unique, and at the time I thought the song was pretty cool (and that Britney was hot), so I just picked it up on a goof. It's a keychain-type thing (although I'm sure it was more intended for belt-loops or whatnot), it takes 3 watch batteries, and it plays the entire Baby One More Time song at the push of a button. Or there's a switch on the side that lets you just play a snippet when you push said button. I thought it might be worth something eventually, but I've never seen another one on eBay to really gauge its worth.

And I liked the version by Travis!

I was 27 when this tartlet's song was released...

... all I remember was that I had the same reaction to her as Steve Bosell did: "Nice hogans."

This is a much, much better pop song from that year:

(OK, it was from 1999. Sub it for "Tearin' Up My Heart").

I'd love to hear the full version of "Oops!" I heard in the trailer for that Russian Nazi comedy "Hitler Kaput!"

For years I thought Britney was a talented singer being held back by poor material and over-producing. I thought she could eventually redeem herself by doing an amazing unplugged set that would sell bajillions.

That's really put a lot of faith in the music industry, isn't it?

I own this "album". Yeeeeeup. Though I do admit to liking really cheesy pop music from time to time, so there isn't any shame to my game. The album as a whole is pretty shit, but I still think this song is catchy.

I'm actually more embarrassed to own Korn and Limp Bizkit albums from around roughly the same time. Look, don't laugh at me. This is when I first started to step out of my comfort zone of hip-hop and R&B music, so I didn't know what was what yet.

That's a good too!

Here's one that combines both "Ooops I did it again" and "Hit me baby one more time" proving that that she pretty much used the same melody on both songs.

I was always partial to the follow-up single "Sometimes" and "You Drive Me Crazy"

I can possibly forgive you for Korn (maybe), but you'll be mocked and chastised even in the most remote villages on Earth for your Limp Bizkit purchases.
