Do you remember when his innovative period ended? It was right around Nashville Skyline. Which was a long time before his latest album.
No doubt you disagree..considering its totally opinon-based but many people agree....(man I agreed enough just to join the forum to reply to this)...Bob Dylan is the ultimate...and IMO you're drastically reducing his list of "great albums"
After Nashville Skyline (even being technical..so I'll forget New Morning, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and Infidels with a few stunningly great songs)
Okay lets see Desire was incredible...Time out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times...and even his painful Christian rock period had a couple good tunes...
And how could you leave out Blood on the Tracks...its critically considered one of the five/ten greatest albums of all time...it was the great divorce album,
I think Springsteen was right in his speech inducting Dylan into the RoR HOF... 'his current work is unfairly judged in comparison to his early work'
IMO, there is nothing Mozart or Bach created rivaling Highway 61 revisited,
But again all opinion based,
Haven't really jived with Waits or Young music...Although I've been told by many how stupid that is...in fact I could see myself getting into Young...but not really Waits,
IMO its Dylan, Springsteen and than Tom Petty...they're my trinity of music

I really like Bob Dylan, and he is a great writer and was innovative for part of his career, but I really think his greatness has backed off over the years.
"best, or better" is a completly opinion based argument, so having said that...
I think Dylan is one of the most important musicians in history, one of the most revelant, but certainly not the best of..ALL TIME...!
And although Waits isnt as well known as Dylan, I think his writing has only gotten better with years, where Dylan started out with great stuff and slowly lost it. The last 25 or so years of Toms writing has been just top notch.
