New Nine Inch Nails songs "Discipline" & "Echoplex"

Released to radio stations today. You can find it if you know where to look now but regardless it will be up on nin.com for free download tonight. It doesn't appear to be part of an album yet.

Heard rumors that it will be part of an album that is released in "two weeks" according to a note by Trent.

Could this be the beginning of part two of Year Zero? I certainly hope so.

NIN is in my top 3 all time bands. I have the utmost respect for Trent conquering his addictions, he has shown he doesn't need drugs to be creative. I really dug the concept and promotion of Year Zero. That said, I miss the aggressive Broken/Downward Spiral sound. The new single is decent, hopefully Finck and co give it a harder live reinterpretation.

I was late with NIN, first really getting into them when I blindly bought a music DVD of theirs about 4 or 5 years ago, and am now a huge fan. Have to say I much prefer the sound and work of With Teeth and Year Zero to the older stuff in general, though obviously there are some songs which are absolutely amazing on The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, etc

It's an MP3 with embedded album art. It's also got an interesting embedded Comments tag: "Go to www.nin.com May 5".

The May 5th thing, I would guess maybe an EP?
This song is alright, not blowing me away or anything, but pretty decent.

Yea, I think thats part of why I'm not overly excited about this. The art from nin.com indicates it could be linked to YZ II, but the sound definitely feels like a With Teeth b-side. I'm still hopeful for YZ II, it's the type of album you don't judge on one single.

I would assume that that with the Ghosts sessions, more traditional NIN songs may have been written and recorded while all those guys were in the studio...maybe.

Indeed.
One of the best songs from the best three albums (With Teeth, Year Zero, The Remix album of YZ).

Great song. Trent really likes keeping his fans on their toes. Jeez! He's really keeping busy and taking advantage of not being part of a record label.

I've been listening to NIN since the beginning, and personally I don't get a lot of the disappointment in With Teeth. It might not be his best, but it's still NIN, and it's better than 99% of the other shit I hear out there IMO.

Anywho, I love that Trent is doing this direct to consumer stuff. My only dislike so far was fighting for a server connection when Ghost I-IV because I couldn't wait!

Good song. I'll DL to my ipod later when I get home. I've enjoyed Trent's output from the last few years, but I haven't loved it. I've been a fan since PHM and Broken came out, so a lot of this new material isn't connecting with me like those albums did. Granted, nostalgia plays a part in that, but I miss the raw, aggressive, industrial feel his older albums had. This new stuff is good, don't get me wrong, but I feel like there aren't many signature songs emerging like tracks off previous records.

I heard this on the radio the other day. They said he finished it and emailed it to them an hour later. It was up for DL later that night. I've only heard it the one time, so I can't give much of an impression at this point. I love the non-label stuff that Trent is doing with Ghosts and now with this. Its good, cheap music for us, and I'm sure more than pays the bills for Trent & Co.

Unfairly, With Teeth had a lot of interest being the first album in 6 years, the first sober album, etc. There's some good songs on there, but it was kind of the "get it out of your system" album for Trent. In a way, With Teeth was kind of a sampling of whats to come, I'd say he's tried all the different styles again on YZ and Ghosts, and Only gets its follow up with Discipline.

Unfortunately for With Teeth, the first half of the album is just weak. Sadly the singles are the only highlights for the first part of the album, and I always associated NIN as an album experience start to finish. It closes strong though, starting with Sunspots.

Personally, I love this song! For me, though, the stuff from Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral is tops for me. Oh, and I liked quite a few songs from The Fragile.

Admittedly, I only gave the song a quick initial listening this morning, but I thought it was merely okay. But I think it's cool that Reznor seems invigorated now that he's free from a major label.
