How come I gotta be the one to mention The Flying Burrito Brothers/Gram Parsons when we're 20+ posts in?

And I completely agree with what wendersfan is saying...whether you think he's the best musically or not, Hank Williams IS country music, his songs pretty much set the template for country, and I guarantee many, if not all, of the people listed in this thread would cite him as a major influence on their work, including one Mr. Johnny Cash. The fact that he wrote such great songs doesn't hurt, either.

In Addition to many the others already posted I'd have to add:
The Band
David Allen Coe
Waylon Jennings
Drive By Truckers
Steve Earle

Wow, tend to have similiar tastes to most of the posters so far.

2 Fave country artists of all-time- Dwight Yoakam & Gary Stewart ( can't believe i get first mention- if anyone like Outlaw/honky tonk- look no further)

besides that

of course Cash-
kris kristofferson
David Allan Coe
All 3 Hanks
Waylon
Merle
Loretta Lynn
George Jones
& on and on

like br5-49 first few albums, but then i thought they got real bad, at very least Subpar

supersuckers, not really country, though i love the band

i still can't get the fascination with steve earle, i've tried- and just cant get into.

Sirius Channel 63- Outlaw country is best invention ever

Charlie Robison
Roger Creager
Robert Earl Keen
Pat Green
Stoney LaRue

Alt-Country:

Merle Haggard
Conway Twitty
