They're both five star albums, but I'll simply pick the one I'd want to listen to more often today:
Purple Rain
(edit for crappy grammar)

When your peaks are this high, I tend to compare the valleys. I think Purple Rain has fewer throw-away tracks than Thriller, so that's the one I'd pick.

Really tough choice since I'm a fan of both but I voted for Thriller. Had to ask: Are they ever going to remaster Purple Rain soundtrack? I think it needs a 2nd disc with songs by The Time and Apollonia 6 plus any other B-sides from the singles released by Prince and The Revolution from the CD.

Thriller has 6 good tracks out of 9, 4 of which have held up through the test of time. Purple Rain? No filler at all, and every track is still as fresh as the day it was released. And it doesn't hurt in the least that Prince is far more gifted musically than Michael ever imagined being.
Which is not to say that I don't enjoy both releases; just that PR is far better.

Purple Rain by FARRRRRRRRRR
Song for song PR is far superior.
Thriller has some good tracks but as a WHOLE, PR is just better.

100% agree, which is why Purple Rain got my vote.
Prince is far more talented than Michael Jackson could ever dream to be.
Thriller is a decent album, but look at all the people it took to create it....Thriller - credits
...while on the contrary, this is all it took to make Purple Rain...Purple Rain - Credits.
On top of that, Jackson only wrote four of the songs on Thriller, while Prince wrote, or co/wrote all of them on Purple Rain.
And if that doesn't impress you enough, you should check out the making of the music feature on the second disc of the Special Edition DVD for Purple Rain sometime. Even I was surprised at some of the stuff I found out.

I'm surprised the poll is as close as it is. Thriller is a great album (and obviously holds a lot of nostalgia value), but Purple Rain is a masterpiece.

I love Thriller. I listen to it all the time. But "When Doves Cry" alone is better than every single track on Thriller, and every other song on Purple Rain is among the best work Prince has ever done. Purple Rain easily.

i love thriller, but why oh why does it end with the lady in my life. couldn't it have been replaced or better yet just have been dropped completely.

HAHHAHAHA
I'm sure the majority of people already know this, but Michael wanted Prince to do 'BAD' with him as a kind of duet. Prince was going to, but aparently they couldnt agree on something in regards to the track itself.
Prince would have been in the 'BAD' video as well if it went well, which it didnt. I'm kinda glad, but would have been interesting at least.
Little known fact, 'Darling Niki' was once going to be called 'Darling Picki'.
