Yup, simply a personal preference . . . and easy for me.

I cannot stand Prince, so "Thriller" by default.

They're both five star albums, but I'll simply pick the one I'd want to listen to more often today:

Purple Rain

(edit for crappy grammar)

When your peaks are this high, I tend to compare the valleys. I think Purple Rain has fewer throw-away tracks than Thriller, so that's the one I'd pick.

1. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
2. Baby Be Mine
3. Girl Is Mine (w/Paul McCartney)
4. Thriller
5. Beat It
6. Billie Jean
7. Human Nature
8. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
9. The Lady In My Life

1. Let's Go Crazy
2. Take Me With U (w/Apollonia)
3. The Beautiful Ones
4. Computer Blue
5. Darling Nikki
6. When Doves Cry
7. I Would Die 4 U
8. Baby I'm A Star
9. Purple Rain

Really tough choice since I'm a fan of both but I voted for Thriller. Had to ask: Are they ever going to remaster Purple Rain soundtrack? I think it needs a 2nd disc with songs by The Time and Apollonia 6 plus any other B-sides from the singles released by Prince and The Revolution from the CD.

Thriller has 6 good tracks out of 9, 4 of which have held up through the test of time. Purple Rain? No filler at all, and every track is still as fresh as the day it was released. And it doesn't hurt in the least that Prince is far more gifted musically than Michael ever imagined being.

Which is not to say that I don't enjoy both releases; just that PR is far better.

There's a better chance of Michael Jackson going back to the way he looks on Thriller's album cover than there is of Prince actually agreeing to something like you've suggested..

I went with Purple Rain. I like Off the Wall a lot more than Thriller.

Purple Rain by FARRRRRRRRRR

Song for song PR is far superior.

Thriller has some good tracks but as a WHOLE, PR is just better.

100% agree, which is why Purple Rain got my vote.

Prince is far more talented than Michael Jackson could ever dream to be.

Thriller is a decent album, but look at all the people it took to create it....Thriller - credits

...while on the contrary, this is all it took to make Purple Rain...Purple Rain - Credits.

On top of that, Jackson only wrote four of the songs on Thriller, while Prince wrote, or co/wrote all of them on Purple Rain.

And if that doesn't impress you enough, you should check out the making of the music feature on the second disc of the Special Edition DVD for Purple Rain sometime. Even I was surprised at some of the stuff I found out.

I'm surprised the poll is as close as it is. Thriller is a great album (and obviously holds a lot of nostalgia value), but Purple Rain is a masterpiece.

Same here. I don't care for Prince and his music, while I enjoy Michael's stuff. Thriller easily.

I love Thriller. I listen to it all the time. But "When Doves Cry" alone is better than every single track on Thriller, and every other song on Purple Rain is among the best work Prince has ever done. Purple Rain easily.

Everyone who voted for Thriller has to purify themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Because Michael's original choice to close the album, "The Young Boy In My Life" was deemed "too creepy" by producer Quincy Jones.

HAHHAHAHA

I'm sure the majority of people already know this, but Michael wanted Prince to do 'BAD' with him as a kind of duet. Prince was going to, but aparently they couldnt agree on something in regards to the track itself.
Prince would have been in the 'BAD' video as well if it went well, which it didnt. I'm kinda glad, but would have been interesting at least.

Little known fact, 'Darling Niki' was once going to be called 'Darling Picki'.

Would Warner Bros. need Prince's permission to release something like that? All the albums were WB, including The Time's 'Ice Cream Castles' and Apollonia 6's album. It was always strange to me that Graffiti Bridge featured non-Prince tracks (although they were technically all Prince tracks with the exception of the vocals) and this one never did.
